Weld Design Strength Capacity Calculation

The document discusses weld design strength capacity calculation. It provides formulas to calculate the strength of various weld configurations including single and double fillet welds, welds under tensile and shear stresses, and U-shaped joints. For a example problem of a double transverse fillet weld with 8mm thickness plates over 40mm length under 480MPa tensile stress, the calculated strength is 217.2kN, exceeding the required design capacity of 91.83kN.

Weld Design Strength Capacity Calculation

Fillet weld: A single transverse fillet weld considers the maximum permissible tensile
stress of the material. The figure below contains the different parts of a fillet weld. Consider
two pieces of length l joined together by a single fillet weld, the strength of the weld joint P is
given by:

Strength=Throat area×Max tensile stress

The throat area, A, is the product of throat thickness t and length of weld l. The throat
thickness t is a function of the fillet weld size, which is equal to the thickness of the plate.
Therefore, the strength of the weld formula for a single fillet weld is:

P=0.707sσtl

where σt is the maximum allowable stress and s is the fillet weld size. Similarly, the weld
strength for a double fillet weld joint is:

P=2×0.707sσtl

When the weld line is parallel to the load direction, the joint is designed based on
the maximum allowable shear stress, τ. The strength of a double parallel weld joint is:

P=2×0.707sτl
Utilizing the combination of transverse and parallel welds, one can estimate the strength of a
U-shaped joint. Such that there are two parallel welds, having length, l2 and a transverse
weld, l1. The strength of the joint is the sum of the strength of three joints.

P=0.707sσtl+2×0.707sτl

Hence, the strength of a double transverse fillet weld joint consisting of two plates having
welding thickness 8 mm and length 40 mm. Take the tensile stress as 480 MPa.

⸫ P = 2(0.707×8×40×480) =217.2 kN
Base on the maximum axial load table 11.1b1 below the maximum design need to withstand
is only 91.83kN, hence the welding strength capacity has exceed the design capacity with
217.2kN
