Objectives of Volleyball
Send the ball over the net to the ground of the opponent’s court.
Serve the ball legally into the opponents’ court.

1900- Canada the first foreign country to adopt the sport
1916- Set and Spike was introduced in the Philippines
1917- Game was change from 21 to 25 points

EQUIPMENTS AND FACILITIES
BALL
 Shape is Spherical made of flexible leather and synthetic leather
 Size is 81cm (32 inches)
 Weight 226g (8 ounces)
 Inside pressure is 0.30-0.32 kg/cm2 (4.26 to 4.61 psi)
Playing Court/court surface
 Rectangular court divided by net
 Size is 9m x 18m
 Must be flat, horizontal, uniform, and must not present any danger of injury to the players

Lines in playing Area


 All lines must be 5cm wide
 light in color and different color from the playing area
 Service Line
 An area which the server serve the ball.
 Mark 10 feet inside the right side line on each back line.
 Center line
 Mark at the center line dividing the court equally into 30 feet squares (9m) which the net is
placed above.
 Boundary line
 Mark the playing court, two side lines and two end lines

 Used to separate the playing court
 Size is 1m wide to 9.5m long
 Made of 10cm black mesh
 Size of horizontal band 7cm wide (2 ¾ inches)

BASIC RULES/PRINCIPLES IN VOLLEYBALL


TEAM
 Consists up to 12 players
 2 coach assistance and medical staff
 3 hits per side/team
 Only the player recorded on the score sheet can play the game
 A team may rotate each time they win.
 Team Leader/Team Captain
 Responsible for discipline the team members
 Coach
 Conducts a play outside the playing court
 Selects line ups, substitutes and take time-outs
 Check the name and numbers of the player prior to the match.
Player
 Players must rotate clockwise, switching position is allowed after the serve (only the frontline
players is allowed to switch).
 Player must hit the ball once
 A player may not cause a ball to come at rest
 A player must avoid touching the net the moment that the ball is already served.
 A player must not block or attacked the serve.
 Server must serve from behind the end line until after a contact.
 A player may serve a ball using underhand, overhead, side arm and jump serve.
 Serve must be returned by a bump only, no setting or attacking the serve.
 A player may substitute into the game only during dead ball situations.

Playing format

 Earning a Point
 Service ace means the team earn a point.
 The ball successfully landed on the opponents court
 The team/player commits fault, penalty or violation

 Fault
 A team commits a fault by making a playing action contrary to the rules (or by violating them in
some other way).
 If two or more faults are committed by opponents simultaneously, a DOUBLE FAULT is called
and the rally is replayed.
 Rally
 Sequence of playing actions from the moment of the service hit by the server until the ball is out
of play.
 If the ball the ball is out during the rally it means a point is awarded.
 Completed rally
 Sequence of playing actions which results in the award of a point.

 Set
 Team which first scores 25 points with a minimum lead of two points considered to win a first
set.
 In the case of a 24-24 tie, play is continued until a two-point lead is achieved example (27-25)
 Match
 The match is won by the team that wins three sets.
 In the case of a 2-2 tie, the deciding 5th set is played to 15 points with a minimum lead of 2
points example (15-17)
PLAYING ACTION
 Ball in Play
 The ball is in play from the moment of the hit of the service authorized by the 1st referee.
 Ball out of Play
 The ball is out of play at the moment of the fault which is whistled by one of the referees; in the
absence of a fault, at the moment of the whistle.
 If the player commits fault or violation means the rally is replayed.
 Ball in
 The ball is “in” if at any moment of its contact with the floor, some part of the ball touches the
court, including the boundary lines.
 Ball out
 The ball completely hit the outside court.
 The ball hit the antennae, ceiling, out of play person it is considered as dead ball or out.
VIOLATION IN VOLLEYBALL
Four hits per side
 Team hit the ball four times before returning it.
Consecutive contact
 A player may not hit the ball 2 times consecutively except when blocking, provided the contacts
take place simultaneously.
Assisted hit
 A player used a person or objects to assist his/her teammates.
Ball Crossing the Net Outside the Crossing Space
 The ball must cross the net within the crossing space.
Penetration Under the Net
 The player penetrate or set their foot or hand under the net or center line.
Contact with the Net
 The player touches the net while the game is on-going.
Attacking Faults
 A back row player completes an attack hit from the front zone, and landed on the front
zone/line.
 The libero completes an attack hit
 An opponent completes an attack hit on a served ball
