INTRODUCTION

Introduction
Piping Analysis
The term “piping analysis” denotes a class of methods to mathematically simulate the mechanical behavior of
piping structures when subject to a variety of loading conditions. The equations to be solved are formulated as
specified by an appropriate piping code. These equations are based on classical mechanics and on extensive
empirical information relating to behavior of various structural materials.

Because of the high dimensionality of the equations involved in piping analysis, except in very simple cases,
these equations can only be solved using a computer program.

Piping analysis calculations are a requirement for piping installed in nuclear power generating plants.
Increasingly, these calculations are being required in other industries.

PepS
PepS Version 7.0 is an integrated piping analysis package containing:
PIPESTRESS Version 4.0.0, plus
Editpipe Version 10.0

PIPESTRESS: the Analysis Program

PIPESTRESS is a well-known and widely used piping analysis program which performs linear elastic analysis of
three-dimensional piping systems subject to a variety of loading conditions. Simple non-linearities in one-
dimensional supports can be modeled. Chemical process piping, nuclear and conventional power generation
piping systems may be investigated for compliance with piping codes and with other constraints on system
response.

PIPESTRESS has advanced analysis capabilities and rigorous QA methodology which has made it a reference
in the nuclear piping industry.
Some advanced features of PIPESTRESS are:
o Full feature nuclear piping analysis program
o ASME Classes 1, 2 and 3 and ANSI/ASME B31.1
o ASME B31.3

INSTALLATION

2. Installation
2.1 Earlier Versions
PepS Version 7.0 may coexist with earlier versions that are already installed on the computer and it is
not necessary to uninstall them.

To remove earlier versions of PepS: in the main Windows menu, select “My Computer”, then “Control
Panel”, then “Add/Remove Programs”.

2.2 Hardware and Software Protection Keys

PepS Version 7.0 is protected either by a hardware key (WIBU-Key) or a software key (CmAct).

CmAct licenses are subjected to restrictions. Contrarily to WIBU-Keys that can be installed on any
computer, CmAct licenses are bound to a single computer. Replacements of devices such as hard disk,
network adapter or CPU chip may invalidate the license. It is therefore necessary to inform DST before
any significant hardware modification.

Please contact DST for conditions and terms of use for CmAct licenses.

2.3 Individual and Network Protection Keys

Two kinds of protection keys are available for PepS Version 7.0:
o individual single-copy protection keys which must be installed on the computer where PepS is being
used; and
o multi-copy network keys.

2.4 Updating or Activating Hardware and Software Protection Keys

All keys used for earlier versions must be updated to function with Version 7.0. The updated keys will
function with all versions of PepS.

Software keys must also be activated if PepS is installed for the first time. Activation is not necessary for
hardware keys.

In order to re-program the hardware and software keys, it is necessary to create a "Remote
Programming Context file" (referred to as "Context File"). To create this file:

1. Open Windows Explorer and choose a directory where the Context File will be saved.

2. Move the mouse to the right column of Windows Explorer and click on the right button of the
mouse, select "New" and then select "WIBU Control file". See example on next page.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

5

INSTALLATION

3. From the following dialogue box, select "WibuBox Remote Programming Context file" (for
hardware keys) or "CodeMeterAct License Request file" (for software keys) and then select
"Create"

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

6

INSTALLATION

4. The file MyWibuBox.wbc or LicenseRequest.WibuCmRaC will be created in the directory

selected in Windows Explorer.
5. Send this file by email as an attachment to [email protected]

6. DST will generate a license update file MyWibuBox.rtu or LicenseUpdate.WibuRaU

which will be returned to you by email. By double-clicking on the file, the key will be updated.

2.5 Installing PepS Version 7.0 using a Single-Copy Hardware Key Locally
The package is delivered on a CD ROM, which is accompanied by a single-copy hardware protection
key which must be installed on the computer where PepS is being used.

Insert the installation CD ROM in the PC drive. The setup procedure should be automatically invoked
and the following screen displayed on the monitor:

First, install the WIBU-Key drivers by selecting the option “WIBU-Key”, if they have not already been
installed for a previous version of PepS.

Important: do not insert the hardware protection key until the WIBU-Key drivers have been
completely installed.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

7

INSTALLATION

Insert the hardware protection key in the parallel or USB port to continue the installation.

Proceed with the installation of GhostView (optional) and then with the installation of PepS 7.0.

If Editpipe or an earlier version of PepS has been installed on the PC, it may not be necessary to
reinstall the WIBU-Key drivers or GhostView.

When the installation is complete, the following icon should appear on the main Windows screen:

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

8

INSTALLATION

2.6 Installing PepS Version 7.0 using a Network Hardware Key

The network key installation requires two steps:

Step 1: Installation of the hardware protection key on the license server

Insert the CD ROM in the PC drive. Install the WIBU-Key drivers only. Do not forget to check the box
“32 bit WkNet/WkLAN Network Server”. Important: do not insert the hardware protection key until
the WIBU-key drivers have been installed.

Insert the hardware protection key in the parallel or USB port of the license server.
Start the license sharing service either by selecting the command “WibuKey – Network Server” in
Windows start menu or by executing the program WKSVW32.EXE located in the WIBU-Key installation
directory, usually C:\Program Files\WIBUKEY\Server or C:\Program Files (x86)
\WIBUKEY\Server for 64-bit operating systems.
This program can also be started as a Windows NT service by checking the box “Install as NT service
with autostart”.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

9

INSTALLATION

Step 2: Installation of PepS on the user’s machine

The installation procedure is exactly the same as for the single-copy key installation, except naturally
that the hardware protection key doesn’t need to be inserted in the local parallel or USB port.

Remarks:

1. The license server can be any computer connected to the network. It is recommended not to execute
PepS on the license server.

2. Only a limited number of PepS, equal to the number of licenses granted by the hardware key, are
allowed to run simultaneously in the network.

3. The license server to use is found automatically by issuing a search broadcast in the local IP subnet.
However, if the license server resides in a different subnet (behind a router), it has to be specified in the
WkLAN server searchlist. For more details please read the WIBU-Key help at topic: Control Panel Applet
– Network Page – Settings for WkLAN.

4. It is also possible to run PepS on a computer without installing it at all by executing locally the
program Pipeman.exe located on a remote computer where PepS has been installed. However, there
is one prerequisite: the WIBU-Key drivers must also be installed on the local machine.

2.7 Installing PepS Version 7.0 using a Single-Copy Software Key Locally
Select the option “CmAct” when installing the drivers.

The rest of the installation is identical to hardware WIBU-Keys.

It is necessary to activate the CmAct license after the installation is completed. The procedure is
identical to updating existing software keys – see paragraph 2.4 for instructions.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

10

INSTALLATION

2.8 Installing PepS Version 7.0 using a Network Software Key

The network key installation requires two steps:

Step 1: Installation of the CmAct license file on the license server

Install the WIBU CmAct drivers only.

Activate the CmAct license on the server machine as instructed in paragraph 2.4 (steps 1 to 6).

The license server starts automatically. To change the server options (communication port, authorized
users, etc.), open CodeMeter Control Center, select the PepS license and start WebAdmin:

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

11

INSTALLATION

Step 2: Installation of PepS on the user’s machine

The installation procedure is exactly the same as for the local license installation, except of course that
no CmAct license has to be activated on the user’s machine.

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

4. Installation Validation
The validation of the installation consists of demonstrating to a very high probability that the correct
programs have been installed. "Correct" means identical to DST's QA programs.

4.1 Size and Date-modified Attributes of Programs

The following is a listing of the executable programs in the PIPESTRESS package. The user should
verify that the “Size” and date “Modified” for the installed programs agree with this list.

Note: The Windows Operating System may display the time stamps differently in different time zones.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

27

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

4.2 PepS Validation Tool

The purpose of the validation tool is to demonstrate that the version of PIPESTRESS installed on the
user’s computer generates the same solutions as DST’s QA version for a large number of VTS
problems. The Verification Test Set problems are used to verify QA versions of PIPESTRESS. These
problems are described in Appendix J of the PIPESTRESS User’s Manual.

4.2.1 The VTS Problems

There are four groups of VTS problems. These are the “A” problems, the “AFNOR” problems, the “N”
problems and the "EDF" problems.

o The “A” problems are the bulk of the PIPESTRESS validation problems and include tests for every
major feature in the program.

o The “N” problems and solutions are defined in the documents “Piping Benchmark Problems”,
NUREG/CR-1677 Volumes 1 and 2 and “Piping Benchmark Problems for the Westinghouse AP600
Standardized Plant” NUREG/CR-6414. These documents were prepared by the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission. This group of problems is also referred to us as "NRC" problems in PepS.

o The “AFNOR” problems and solutions are defined in documents generated by the “Association
Française de Normalisation".

o Electricité de France (EDF) has an in-house version of PIPESTRESS which is called "CALTUY
SOLVEUR". EDF also has its own set of validation problems and has provided DST with the data
and solutions to these problems.

4.2.2 Validation Tool Methodology

The input data for the "N" problems, the "AFNOR", the "EDF" problems and most of the "A" problems
are contained on the installation CD ROM. These are the validation problems. The report files for the
"A", "N" and "AFNOR" problems have been generated on DST's QA computer. The report files for the
"EDF" problems have been generated by EDF. These files are also contained on the CD ROM.

The validation tool automatically calculates these problems and compares the report files.

All relevant unequal compares are reported.

Because of the diverse nature of PC environments, some unequal compares are to be expected. There
may be round-off differences between solutions, file dates or other minor, cosmetic differences.
However, each unequal compare should be controlled and the cause of the difference explained.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

28

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

4.2.3 How to use the Validation Tool

To invoke the validation tool, first select " Tools" in the Editpipe Manager main window, then select the
option "Validation Tool", as shown below.

Place the installation CD ROM in the PC drive and select the folder location for the original files (here E:
is the CD drive). It is a folder containing 4 zip files: A.zip, AFNOR.zip, EDF.zip and NRC.zip. The user
may calculate and compare the "NRC" problems, the "AFNOR" problems, the "EDF" problems or the "A"
problems, which are designated as "Main validation problems", as shown below.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

29

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

The Editpipe Manager will then download the QA solutions for the selected problems from the CD ROM
and unzip them, as shown below.

Please note that the QA solutions are by default copied to the subdirectory \Validation of the PepS
installation directory, usually c:\Program Files\PepS 7.0. If the user does not have administrative rights,
he should change the default option to another directory where he has write permission.

Change

Press
"Go"

When the download is complete, the Tool will automatically execute PIPESTRESS for the selected
problems, as shown below.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

30

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

When the Tool completes the comparisons, the user may display a log summarizing the results of the
comparisons. The following is the log generated for the A problems during a test.

Some problems such as "A-53\cl2mix" in the A problems generated an unequal compare. Note that in
this report an "*" highlights files with one or more unequal compares.

All unequal compares must be reviewed to determine their cause. The user can display the report
generated by the comparison utility by clicking on the name of the report file.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

31

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

4.2.4 Review all Unequal Compares

Review all unequal compares generated by the comparison utility for "A", "N", "AFNOR" and "EDF"
problems. If all unequal compares can be accounted for either as round-off differences, file dates or, in
rare cases, cosmetic differences that do not effect engineering decisions, the conclusion is that the
version of PIPESTRESS installed on the user’s computer may be considered identical to the version
installed on DST’s QA computer in Geneva, from the point of view of engineering calculations.

To verify the cause of the unequal compares, investigate the contents of the report generated by the
comparison utility COMPPS. In the example above, the unequal compare corresponds to the difference
in the date and time of the execution.

4.2.5 Repeat Validation Procedure

It is recommended that the validation utility be re-executed at regular intervals and, particularly, after
major changes in the hardware or operating system environment.

PepS Version 7.0 Installation and Operation Guide, November 2018

32

INSTALLATION VALIDATION

4.3 Customize Command Files

The command files are text files which can easily be edited to remove some of the test problems and to
add others. For example, an organization may have internal test problems which it requires to be
executed for each implementation of a new version of safety related software. In this way, the command
files used for validation may be customized to best comply with internal requirements.

By default, the command files are loaded in the following directories:

C:\Program Files\PepS 7.0\Validation\A\A_PS.CMD

C:\Program Files\PepS 7.0\Validation\A\A_POSTR.CMD
C:\Program Files\PepS 7.0\Validation\A\A_COMP.CMD
