Introduction
Piping Analysis
The term “piping analysis” denotes a class of methods to mathematically simulate the mechanical behavior of
piping structures when subject to a variety of loading conditions. The equations to be solved are formulated as
specified by an appropriate piping code. These equations are based on classical mechanics and on extensive
empirical information relating to behavior of various structural materials.
Because of the high dimensionality of the equations involved in piping analysis, except in very simple cases,
these equations can only be solved using a computer program.
Piping analysis calculations are a requirement for piping installed in nuclear power generating plants.
Increasingly, these calculations are being required in other industries.
PepS

INTRODUCTION
Scope
This Guide documents the procedures for installing and executing PepS Version 7.0.
This Guide also documents how to use the Editpipe Manager “Validation Tool”. This tool may be used to verify
that PIPESTRESS has been correctly installed. It may also be used to periodically verify that PIPESTRESS is
functioning properly, for example after a change in the PC environment.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
1. Hardware Requirements
Computer: PC
INSTALLATION
2. Installation
2.1 Earlier Versions
PepS Version 7.0 may coexist with earlier versions that are already installed on the computer and it is
not necessary to uninstall them.
To remove earlier versions of PepS: in the main Windows menu, select “My Computer”, then “Control
Panel”, then “Add/Remove Programs”.
CmAct licenses are subjected to restrictions. Contrarily to WIBU-Keys that can be installed on any
computer, CmAct licenses are bound to a single computer. Replacements of devices such as hard disk,
network adapter or CPU chip may invalidate the license. It is therefore necessary to inform DST before
any significant hardware modification.
Please contact DST for conditions and terms of use for CmAct licenses.
Software keys must also be activated if PepS is installed for the first time. Activation is not necessary for
hardware keys.
In order to re-program the hardware and software keys, it is necessary to create a "Remote
Programming Context file" (referred to as "Context File"). To create this file:
1. Open Windows Explorer and choose a directory where the Context File will be saved.
2. Move the mouse to the right column of Windows Explorer and click on the right button of the
mouse, select "New" and then select "WIBU Control file". See example on next page.
INSTALLATION
3. From the following dialogue box, select "WibuBox Remote Programming Context file" (for
hardware keys) or "CodeMeterAct License Request file" (for software keys) and then select
"Create"
INSTALLATION
2.5 Installing PepS Version 7.0 using a Single-Copy Hardware Key Locally
The package is delivered on a CD ROM, which is accompanied by a single-copy hardware protection
key which must be installed on the computer where PepS is being used.
Insert the installation CD ROM in the PC drive. The setup procedure should be automatically invoked
and the following screen displayed on the monitor:
First, install the WIBU-Key drivers by selecting the option “WIBU-Key”, if they have not already been
installed for a previous version of PepS.
Important: do not insert the hardware protection key until the WIBU-Key drivers have been
completely installed.
INSTALLATION
Insert the hardware protection key in the parallel or USB port to continue the installation.
Proceed with the installation of GhostView (optional) and then with the installation of PepS 7.0.
If Editpipe or an earlier version of PepS has been installed on the PC, it may not be necessary to
reinstall the WIBU-Key drivers or GhostView.
When the installation is complete, the following icon should appear on the main Windows screen:
INSTALLATION
Insert the hardware protection key in the parallel or USB port of the license server.
Start the license sharing service either by selecting the command “WibuKey – Network Server” in
Windows start menu or by executing the program WKSVW32.EXE located in the WIBU-Key installation
directory, usually C:\Program Files\WIBUKEY\Server or C:\Program Files (x86)
\WIBUKEY\Server for 64-bit operating systems.
This program can also be started as a Windows NT service by checking the box “Install as NT service
with autostart”.
INSTALLATION
Remarks:
1. The license server can be any computer connected to the network. It is recommended not to execute
PepS on the license server.
2. Only a limited number of PepS, equal to the number of licenses granted by the hardware key, are
allowed to run simultaneously in the network.
3. The license server to use is found automatically by issuing a search broadcast in the local IP subnet.
However, if the license server resides in a different subnet (behind a router), it has to be specified in the
WkLAN server searchlist. For more details please read the WIBU-Key help at topic: Control Panel Applet
– Network Page – Settings for WkLAN.
4. It is also possible to run PepS on a computer without installing it at all by executing locally the
program Pipeman.exe located on a remote computer where PepS has been installed. However, there
is one prerequisite: the WIBU-Key drivers must also be installed on the local machine.
2.7 Installing PepS Version 7.0 using a Single-Copy Software Key Locally
Select the option “CmAct” when installing the drivers.
It is necessary to activate the CmAct license after the installation is completed. The procedure is
identical to updating existing software keys – see paragraph 2.4 for instructions.
INSTALLATION
Activate the CmAct license on the server machine as instructed in paragraph 2.4 (steps 1 to 6).
The license server starts automatically. To change the server options (communication port, authorized
users, etc.), open CodeMeter Control Center, select the PepS license and start WebAdmin:
INSTALLATION
EXECUTION
3. Execution
Once the installation is complete, PepS may be invoked from the main Windows menu by
double-clicking on the PepS icon.
When PepS is invoked, the Editpipe Manager prompts the user to open a new or existing project. In the
example below, a new project for the NRC time history benchmark has been defined.
EXECUTION
Selecting the file INRCAP_3.FRE as the PIPESTRESS “Text Input File” and then selecting the option
“Edit/View Input File” invokes Editpipe in the “Edit” mode, as shown below.
To get a graphical view of the model, click the “Toggle View/Edit” icon on the top toolbar. The icons on
this toolbar enable the user to invoke other useful commands:
EXECUTION
There are many easy-to-use viewing options, for example, to generate this detail.
EXECUTION
Another example is selecting "Elements" in the "Element List / Condition" drop-down menu
The structural elements are displayed in the input order. When an element is selected, the element is
highlighted in the plot.
EXECUTION
EXECUTION
The Editpipe Manager will present the options "Piping Analysis" or "Batch Execution". The most
frequently used option is "Batch Execution" which permits easy re-analysis. When this option is
selected, the following screen is presented.
The Editpipe Manager displays the standard PIPESTRESS console messages in the “Execution
Monitor” shown below. PIPESTRESS has generated the report files with extensions "prd", "pri", "prl"
and has started the phase "RESPX" which generates the report file with extension "prx"
EXECUTION
When the PIPESTRESS execution terminates, PepS displays the HIGHEST STRESS POINTS report,
as shown below.
EXECUTION
At the termination of the PIPESTRESS calculation, control is returned to the Editpipe Manager, which
displays the following screen and provides many post-processing tools.
EXECUTION
filename.prd QA banner, echo print, free format conversion, modal extraction reports
filename.pri Input data verification reports
filename.prl Solutions for static load cases
filename.prr Solutions for floor response load cases
filename.prx Solutions for time history load cases
filename.prc Solutions for combination load cases
filename.prf Solutions for thermal transient load cases and fatigue analysis reports
filename.pre Support summaries, composite material connectivity element reports, contents
and timing messages
Other result files:
filename.rsi Binary restart file. “i” is a sequentially generated integer 1 to 9

INSTALLATION VALIDATION
4. Installation Validation
The validation of the installation consists of demonstrating to a very high probability that the correct
programs have been installed. "Correct" means identical to DST's QA programs.
Note: The Windows Operating System may display the time stamps differently in different time zones.
INSTALLATION VALIDATION
o The “A” problems are the bulk of the PIPESTRESS validation problems and include tests for every
major feature in the program.
o The “N” problems and solutions are defined in the documents “Piping Benchmark Problems”,
NUREG/CR-1677 Volumes 1 and 2 and “Piping Benchmark Problems for the Westinghouse AP600
Standardized Plant” NUREG/CR-6414. These documents were prepared by the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission. This group of problems is also referred to us as "NRC" problems in PepS.
o The “AFNOR” problems and solutions are defined in documents generated by the “Association
Française de Normalisation".
o Electricité de France (EDF) has an in-house version of PIPESTRESS which is called "CALTUY
SOLVEUR". EDF also has its own set of validation problems and has provided DST with the data
and solutions to these problems.
The validation tool automatically calculates these problems and compares the report files.
Because of the diverse nature of PC environments, some unequal compares are to be expected. There
may be round-off differences between solutions, file dates or other minor, cosmetic differences.
However, each unequal compare should be controlled and the cause of the difference explained.
INSTALLATION VALIDATION
Place the installation CD ROM in the PC drive and select the folder location for the original files (here E:
is the CD drive). It is a folder containing 4 zip files: A.zip, AFNOR.zip, EDF.zip and NRC.zip. The user
may calculate and compare the "NRC" problems, the "AFNOR" problems, the "EDF" problems or the "A"
problems, which are designated as "Main validation problems", as shown below.
INSTALLATION VALIDATION
The Editpipe Manager will then download the QA solutions for the selected problems from the CD ROM
and unzip them, as shown below.
Please note that the QA solutions are by default copied to the subdirectory \Validation of the PepS
installation directory, usually c:\Program Files\PepS 7.0. If the user does not have administrative rights,
he should change the default option to another directory where he has write permission.

Press
"Go"
When the download is complete, the Tool will automatically execute PIPESTRESS for the selected
problems, as shown below.
INSTALLATION VALIDATION
When the Tool completes the comparisons, the user may display a log summarizing the results of the
comparisons. The following is the log generated for the A problems during a test.
Some problems such as "A-53\cl2mix" in the A problems generated an unequal compare. Note that in
this report an "*" highlights files with one or more unequal compares.
All unequal compares must be reviewed to determine their cause. The user can display the report
generated by the comparison utility by clicking on the name of the report file.
INSTALLATION VALIDATION
To verify the cause of the unequal compares, investigate the contents of the report generated by the
comparison utility COMPPS. In the example above, the unequal compare corresponds to the difference
in the date and time of the execution.
