Impact Test LOAY

This document provides information about conducting a Charpy impact test to measure the energy absorbed by a notched material specimen when struck by a swinging pendulum. The test involves mounting a standardized notched specimen horizontally and striking it with a pendulum. The difference in the pendulum's swing height before and after impact indicates the energy absorbed by the specimen. Key details provided include the specimen dimensions and notching specifications. Advantages of the Charpy test are its simplicity, use of small specimens, ability to test at different temperatures quickly, and suitability for comparisons. A diagram illustrates the test setup and procedure. The results and conclusion would report the energy absorbed by the tested specimen(s).

Title of the Experiment: Charpy Imapct Test.

TITLE OF THE EXPERIMENT

Charpy Impact Test

Aim: To perform Charpy Impact Test

Objective : To conduct Charpy Impact test by measuring energy absorbed by a specimen

in units of joules

Principle : The Charpy Impact Test imply striking a notched impact specimen with a
swinging weight attached to a swinging pendulum. The specimen under testing breaks at
its notched cross-section upon impact. Then the upward swing of the pendulum is used to
determine the amount of energy absorbed (or the notch toughness) in this process. The
energy absorbed is measured in units of joules.

Introduction: The test was developed around 1900 by S.B. Russell (1898, American) and
Georges Charpy (1901, French). The test became known as the Charpy test in the early
1900s because of the technical contributions and standardization efforts by Charpy. The
energy measured by the Charpy test is the work done to fracture the specimen. On
impact, the specimen deforms elastically until yielding takes place, and a plastic region
develops at the notch. As the test specimen continues to be deformed by the impact, the
plastic zone works hardens. This increases the stress and strain in the plastic zone until the
specimen fractures.

The test consists of holding a machined specimen, of a specified size containing an

accurately machined notch of specific dimension, on the anvil at both ends as a simple
beam. A pendulum impacts on the specimen at the back face of the notch and the start and
finish heights of the pendulum are measured. The difference in height equates to the energy
absorbed by the specimen before it fractures.
Advantages of Charpy Impact Test:

1. Relatively simple test

2. Utilizes small, cheap specimen
3. Quick and possible to carry at different temperatures
4. Suitable for measuring differences and make comparisons.

Specimen Details:

Size- 55mmX10mmX10mm (Square bar)

Notch – V Notch or U Notch

Angle of Notch- 450 V Notch with 0.25mm root radius.

Depth of the Notch-2 mm

Position of Specimen on Anvil: Horizontal like Simply Supported Beam.

Procedure:

1. The specimens to be tested are mounted horizontally like simply supported Beam
on the supports and against the anvils to have an impact on the opposite (Back) face
of the notch.
2. The notch is aligned between the anvils.
3. The pendulum is then raised and secured in the release mechanism.
4. At this point, the scale on the excess energy indicating mechanism is zeroed.
5. The pendulum is then released from its release mechanism, striking the edge of the
pendulum to impact the specimen.
6. The scale records energy utilizes for the breaking of the specimen in Joules.
7. Once all the specimens for a given material have been tested, the impact resistance,
in joules per meter, for the specific material is calculated as per the given formula

metal at different temperatures:

TEMPERATURS : 846 C
NO TREATMENT AIR COLDE WATER COLDE FURNCE COLDE
132 J 149 J 69 J 142.5
Result and Conclusion:
The given specimen 1 absorbed ……69 J ..................Joules of energy In Charpy Imapct
