Students will conduct a chemistry experiment using natural indicators to test the pH of household substances. They will research natural indicators online and in provided materials. Students will then make a list of substances to test, noting the expected pH. They will plan their experiment, detailing the independent variable, dependent variable, and controlled variables. Students will write instructions for making the indicator and for testing it. They will present their results and safety precautions. They will write a research question and decide who will present which parts of the planning process. Students will peer assess each other's work.

Name:
SUBJECT/TOPIC: CHEMISTRY: Chemistry Project- Indicators
GRADE/SECTION:
DATE//LESSON: TEACHER:
OBJECTIVES : Students will conduct a record and analyse results to reach a valid conclusion.

(Paired activity)

3C-LER: Critical thinking / Collaboration / Effective communication/ Research/ Learner agency

Planning Sheet:
You will need to make a natural indicator at home and test it against a few household
items and then present your results.
You will individually do your experiment at home and collate your results for your
group. You must take photos. You may take a video.
1. Research a natural indicator that you could use. You may use the following
links to help you. Try to use a range of different websites.

indicators-around-us/

- Also use the power points uploaded on TODDLE.

2. Make a list of the substances you will test at home.

Research their pH value to find out whether they are acidic, neutral or alkaline
and their strength.

Note: You will be assessed on:

 Number of sources used
 Sources cited appropriately using MLA
 How relevant is the research?
3. Now plan out your experiment.
- What is your independent variable? (What factor will you change?)

- What is your dependent variable ? (What will you measure?)

- What are your controlled variables? (What will you keep the same?)

4. Write out a step by step instruction of how you will make your indicator?

5. Write out a step by step instruction of how you will test your indicator?

6. How will you present your results?

7. What safety measures will you take?

Write a Risk Assessment: (Hazards, Risks and Precautions)

8. Write your research question.

9. Decide who will present what in your Planning Presentation next week. You
will be assessed on the following:
- Use of visuals
- Clear verbal communication
- Body Language
- Voice modulation
- Confident presentation.
You can make a power point presentation or poster presentation.

10: You will Peer assess others. You will be assessed on your quality of feedback.
- You have assessed others appropriately
- You have said what you liked
- You have said what you don’t like
- You have suggested an appropriate improvement.
- Your feedback is positive
- You have acted on other’s feedback
