Quarter 3 – Module 1:
Types of Volcanic Eruption
Introductory Message
This Contextualized Learning Module (CLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson with ease.
This CLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test is provided to measure your prior knowledge on the lesson. This will
show you if you need to proceed in completing this module or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the
end of this module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning.
Answer keys are provided for all activities and tests. We trust that you will be honest
in using them.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher is also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you in your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this CLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests.
Likewise, read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any question in using this CLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

The Philippines is one of the many countries that is located along Pacific Ring of
Fire, hence, it is considered to be a home to many volcanoes. Some of the most
famous volcanoes in the country are Mayon Volcano, Mt. Pinatubo and Taal Volcano
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Differentiate active from inactive volcanoes.
2. Describe the different types of volcanic eruption according to structure and
activity.

What I Know

Direction: Choose the letter of the BEST answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate
sheet of paper.

Lesson
VOLCANOES
1

Volcanoes are opening in the Earth’s crust where magma erupts to the
surface. They are naturally magnificent and beautiful but they can cause severe
damage to properties and harmful effects to our environment.

In your previous grade, you have learned about earthquakes and its
relationship to the location of the Philippines along Pacific Ring of Fire. Due to its
location it is also considered to have many volcanoes.

This module will help you understand the different types of volcanoes
according to structure, activity and eruption.

What’s In

Activity 1: I KNOW YOU, VOLCANO!

Directions: Based on your knowledge about volcanoes write five (5) descriptions of
volcano.

VOLCANO

3
What is New

Activity 2: TYPES OF VOLCANOES

Directions: Given the different types of volcanoes, characterized each type using the
descriptions below. Write the letters only.

I. TYPES OF VOLCANOES ACCORDING TO STRUCTURE

A. Steep slope D. formed by the accumulation of lava that oozes from the
volcano
B. Wide base E. formed from alternate solidification of both lava and
pyroclastic deposits.
C. half way of F. build from ejected lava fragments
having steep slope
and wide base

II. TYPES OF VOLCANO ACCORDING TO ACTIVITY

TYPE OF VOLCANO DESCRIPTION

Volcanoes that have a record of
eruption within the last 600 years or
1. those that have erupted 10, 000 years
ago based on analyses of their
materials.
Volcanoes that are not currently
erupting but have erupted within the
2.
recordable history and are expected to
erupt again in the future.
Volcanoes that are considered as dead
3. and are not expected to erupt in the
future.

What is It

Volcanoes can be classified according to its structure

Types of volcanoes in terms of Description

structure
 steep slope
 wide crater
Cinder Cone Volcano
 built from ejected lava fragments
 most abundant type of volcano
 large, nearly perfect slope
 formed from alternate solidification
Composite Cone or Stratovolcano of both lava and pyroclastic deposits
 larger than cinder cones
 can erupt with great violence
 broad, slightly dome structure
 resembles warrior’s shield
 formed by the accumulation of lava
Shield Volcano
that oozes out from the volcano
 wide base
 eruption is not generally explosive

5
Moreover, volcanoes are also classified based on their volcanic
activities.

Types of volcanoes in terms Description

of volcanic activity
 These are volcanoes that are currently
erupting or expected to erupt in the future.
 Volcanoes that have a record of eruption
Active Volcano
within the last 600 years or those that erupted
10, 000 years ago based on analyses of their
materials.
 These are volcanoes that are not currently
erupting but have erupted within recordable
Dormant Volcano
history and are expected to erupt again in the
future.
 These are volcanoes that are considered dead
and are not expected to erupt in the future.
Extinct/Inactive Volcano
 Volcanoes that have not erupted for the last
10, 000 years.

Volcanoes can erupt differently. They are classified according to their

style of eruption. Here are the different types of volcanic eruption.

Types of Volcanic Eruption Description

 A stream-driven eruption as the hot rocks come
in contact with water.
Phreatic or hydrothermal
 Short-lived, characterized by ash columns but
may be an onset of a larger eruption
 A violent eruption due to contact between water
and magma
Phreatomagmatic  A large column of a very fine ash and high speed
and sideway emission of pyroclastics called
base surges are observed
 A periodic weak to violent eruption
Strombolian
characterized by fountain lava
 Characterized by tall eruption columns that
Vulcanian reached up to 20 km high with pyroclastic flow
and ashfall tephra
 Excessively explosive type of eruption of gas
Plinian
and pyroclastics.

while ____6______ are formed from alternate solidification of both lava or pyroclastic
deposits. Volcano that is formed by the accumulation of lava that oozes out is called

Volcanoes are also classified according to their activity. ______8_______ are
currently erupting or expected to erupt in the future. Some volcanoes are not
currently erupting but have erupted within recordable history and expected to erupt
again in the future, these are called _______9_________. There are also that are
considered dead and are not expected to erupt in the future, these volcanoes are
called extinct or _____10________.
Another way to classify volcanoes is based on their style of eruption.
_______11______ is a steam-driven eruption while _____12_______ is a violent eruption
due to contact between water and magma. Volcanoes that erupt in a periodic weak
to violent and is characterized by fountain lava are called _____13________. Paricutin
