Subject Matter/Content to be taught in the lesson
Solar System (Earth)

Prerequisites
Background knowledge on what they already know about the Earth

New Key Vocabulary

Solar System: the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun,
together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. The
planets of the solar system are (in order of distance from the sun) Mercury, Venus,
Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Earth-the planet on which we live; the world.
Planet- A planet is a large, rounded astronomical body that is neither a star nor its
remnant.
Universe-all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos. The
universe is believed to be at least 10 billion light years in diameter and contains a vast
number of galaxies; it has been expanding since its creation in the Big Bang about 13
billion years ago.

Content/Facts
● What we already know.
● Video
○ BrainPop video about the Earth
● What is the Earth
○ Earth is the third planet from the sun in our solar system.
○ Basic facts (how old, characteristics)

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies
“Good Afternoon class, today we will briefly learn about the sun and complete a fun
activity based on the Sun using facts we used in class!”

Development/Teaching Approaches
● “First, we will be going over a presentation to teach us a little bit about Earth.”
● Pull up powerpoint
● “Does anyone know any facts about the Earth already?” (students’ answer)
● “Now that we went over what we already know, I have a brainpop video to tell
us more about Earth.” (play video)
● “What did we learn in the video about Earth?” (students answer)
● “There was a lot of information covered on the Earth in the video, but I also
made slides to tell us some additional facts!”
(Below is information from powerpoint)
● “So what is the Earth?”
● “Earth is the third planet from the sun in our solar system.”
● “It is the only place known in the universe where life has originated and found
habitat.”
● “It is 4.5 billion years old”
● “Like all planets, Earth orbits around the sun.
○ -It takes 365 days for the Earth to complete one full orbit.”

● It is Rocky! —It has solid and active surface with mountains, valleys, canyons,
plains and much more. It is also an ocean planet, water covers 70% of Earth’s
surface!
● Earth is the 5th largest planet in the solar system.
● It spins on an axis– Which is why we have daytime and nighttime!
● Earth’s atmosphere is the right thickness to keep the planet warm.
● There are many satellites taking pictures and measurements of the Earth.
● “Now that we learned some facts about Earth, I want you to tell me your
favorite facts we talked about” (students answer)
● “Great job everyone! I wanted us to repeat some of the facts because for
today's activity we will be doing an activity similar to our sun activity. You will
be writing four facts on the Earth. Once you have your facts written you may
color the Earth! Once that is finished you may come up to one of us to attach
your facts to the Earth!”
● “I will pass out the materials.” (pass out the materials)
● “If anyone needs help, I will have facts written on the board for help!”
● “For the first step, I want everyone to write their five facts on your four small
suns. Once we have that finished, I will go over the next step!”
● “Next, I want everyone to color their Earth.”
● “Lastly, I want everyone to raise their hand when they’re finished and we will
come around and whole bunch your subs and attach the string.”

Closure/Summarizing Strategies
“Great job today everyone. I hope everyone learned some things about Earth! Today
we only briefly went over the Earth. Next week we will be going more in depth about
Earth!”

Accommodations/Differentiation
● Students would be pulled back by one of the teachers if they began to fall
behind.
