EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES (ATTENDANCE/ASSIGNMENT)
1 This policy provides students with guidance on what to do when students experience unexpected,
non-academic events (extenuating circumstances) which have a significant impact on their
ability to attend lectures or complete assignments. The academy operates an evidence-based
approach to ensure that all are dealt with fairly, equally, and transparently so that no student is
advantaged or disadvantaged by the policy.
2 Extenuating circumstances can only be used to get approval to continue classes when there is
inadequate attendance or to get further time for assignments and, if necessary, the removal of a
capped mark. They cannot be used to gain additional marks.
4 Assignment is an integral part of the teaching and learning experience in higher education.
Sometimes, no fault of your own, you may not be able to undertake or complete and submit an
assignment before a given deadline.
5 If any of these happen to you, you should officially communicate your extenuating
circumstances to the academy.
7 Any technical issues which may occur during the last minute of a submission do not constitute
extenuating circumstances as it is the responsibility of students to get prepared and sort out any
issues prior to the given deadlines.
8 When an extension is already given for an assignment submission, further extensions will not be
accepted.
2
NATURE OF EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES ARE INCLUDED BUT NOT
LIMITED TO:
c) Accident
d) Natural Disaster
e) Court Appearance
f) Other circumstances which are exceptional and outside the student’s control
11 The following are some of the examples of evidence that would help the approval of the
application’s acceptance.
12 A medical certificate along with supportive evidence obtained at the time of an illness confirming
the illness of a student or other person. (This must include the dates covered by the illness).
13 A signed and dated letter from a legal practitioner, police officer, or a court official.
14 The academy might request other forms of evidence which may support extenuating
circumstances based on the situation.
