CW1 Report

This 3 sentence summary provides the key details about the coursework document: The document outlines the coursework requirements for the Computer Aided Design 2 course, which requires students to conduct optimization and sensitivity analysis of a mechanical assembly using CAD tools to minimize weight under varying loads. Students must develop a 3D model of an assembly with over 3 parts, perform static and fluid flow analysis, and conduct local and global sensitivity analysis to optimize critical components and satisfy stress criteria. The coursework will be assessed based on a 2000 word report submitted online by December 2nd, 2021 discussing the design, analysis, and optimization of a selected mechanical assembly.

Assessment weightage 50 %
Type and date of submission On line report submission -2nd Dec 2021

Aim The aim of the Course work is to carryout Optimization and

sensitivity analysis using CAD tools for a mechanical
oriented assembly in order to adjust the weight of the
critical part / assembly under varying loading conditions.
Learning Outcomes • Model an engineering system as an assembly and
conduct analysis of the assembly for static analysis based
on Von Misses criteria.
• Conduct global and local sensitivity studies and perform
optimization study of the selected engineering
components to get optimized results for the selected
assembly.
• Conduct fluid flow analysis involving laminar and
turbulent flow.

Task(s)

Background of the problem

A mechanical system is under static load that enable the assembly to reach to its elastic state.
Considering the constraint, design the assembly established on optimization in order to adjust the
weight while considering appropriate factor of safety, material selection satisfying Von Misses
stress criteria. Each student is expected to address the following conditions:
 Developing the 3D model using CAD tools (PRO-E / PTC CREO) of the assembly that
contains more than three standard engineering parts;
 Optimizing the design of the assembly of the identified critical parts.
