Post Regionals

Brown University's men's ultimate frisbee team, Brownian Motion, competed in the 2008 UPA Regionals where they finished tied for 5th place. They started off strong by winning their first two games but lost their final three games, including close losses to Dartmouth and UMass. This prevented them from advancing to the UPA Nationals. The tournament provided valuable experience for the team's freshmen. The team recognized the accomplishments of their four graduating seniors who were leaders of the program. The team continues fundraising efforts for the Mike Franz Memorial Fund to support the ultimate frisbee program.

Regionals: An Inspiration for Next

Lancaster, Massachusetts - The first game of a weekend can set a tone for a tournament. Unfortunately for Brown, that tone was one of inconsistency and letting leads slip away. Saturdays opening round pitted Brown against the #14 University of Maine-Farmington. B-Mo established an early lead due to strong play by the D-line. Maine-Farmington fought back, never letting B-Mo get comfortable. The next game proved to be the highlight of Regionals. After again starting the game with a sequence of breaks, the Oline itself was broken a number of times leading to B-Mo being on the downside of a two point differential late in the game. However, Brown clawed its way back to a lead with great D-line play, led by defensive handler extraordinaire Greg Olson, ultimately winning 15-13. After the thrilling Williams victory, B-Mo was able to see its B team, P-Funk, win a stunning upset against #9 MIT, 17-15. This was especially fulfilling for P-Funk as its players were all well aware of the posted prediction of a 15-5 defeat. The start of the next game versus Dartmouth was familiar as Brown jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. However, eventual Regionals champion Dartmouths push back proved to be too much as it took the game 1511. Brown awoke Sunday with high hopes, needing to win three games in a row to advance to Nationals, something it has become accustomed to over the last decade. Facing UMass, Brown, for the fourth time, jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. However UMass huck-n-pray offense, combined with its defense designed to take away Jimmy and Mike Vs deep game, sent Brown home with an 11-15 defeat. One of the most visible problems with the offense of Brown at Regionals was its lack of a deep game. Despite overall high intensity from the sidelines and huge efforts by the seniors, Brown found itself checking the Nationals scores from home rather than scoring in Boulder. While the weekend clearly didnt go the way that we would have liked, it did provide everyone, specifically the freshman, with high pressure experience. It also showed that while we can be the best team in the region, nothing is guaranteed. The final positive result of Regionals is that its memory should serve as a motivator for the returners as they work for the next 350 days so that next time their season wont end in early May.

Senior Shout out Regionals marked the final time that Mike Vandenberg, James Lowe, Jon Greer, and (probably) Tyler Gage would don the Brownian Motion jersey in the College Series. But it wont be the last time they will be spoken of. All four were a part of the 2005 national championship team and will be forever a part of Brownian Motion lore. Mike V. has been a leader since day 1, handling with his brother on the 2005 championship O-line. Jimmy Lowe has been a leader on both sides of the disc as a jack-of-all-trades, cutting and handling, playing with a fire in his eye that will be sorely missed. Tyler Gage, although gone for two years, was a starter both his years at Brown being a consistent, go-to cutter. Jon Greer, having worked his way up from the C team to the A team, has been an incredible sideline leader and a layout D waiting to happen. All four have been tremendous leaders and leave large shoes to be filled.

While Brownian Motions Spring 2008 season has come to an end, our campaigning efforts are still escalating for the Mike Franz Memorial Fund. We are continuing strongly towards our goal of $150,000 which because of such strong support has already surpassed the original goal of $100,000. Once officially endowed, the Franz Fund will work to help pay for field time, travel expenses, and many of the expenses incurred by players throughout the THANK YOU FANS & FAMILY & FRIENDS!! year.
