Narrative Report
We were tasked to make a mini garden for 3 weeks duration to plant vegetables and
flowers. I chose to plant tomato and eggplant for vegetables then roses and bougainvillea for
flowers.
In preparing for my mini garden, since our compound is fully cemented, I’ve used
plastic pots and recycled plastic bottles as improvised pots. For the soil, my aunt lent me her
extra sack of loam soil. And for the plants, I bought commercial seeds for the vegetables and
for the flowers, I asked our neighbor for flower’s stems for me to plant.
During the first week, I planted the vegetable seeds. I used tray and filled it with 5
inched deep soil. I’ve poured the seeds into the tray, topped some soil and watered it. On the
other plant container, I used 1.5L of plastic bottle, cut it in to haves vertically, and putted
some holes at the bottom using soldering iron. On the following day, I’ve planted the stems of
roses and bougainvillea flowers in the plastic pots and 2 L mineral water container. In the
other day, I’ve planned to used mix loam soil and usual soil to determine the differences of
using pure loam soil and the mix one in the growth of the plants. I’ve place my mini garden
in an area that can be hit by the sun. And I used to water the plants every morning.
On the 2nd week, the vegetable seeds began to sprout. My roses began to produce
leaves and the bougainvillea’s leaves fell out. On the other day, my uncle lent me some of his
sunflower seeds which is good to plant during hot seasons. I’ve watched documentaries on
how to plant sun flowers, then I discovered that it is also good to put the sunflower seeds in a
container topped with tissue paper. I’ve tried the experiment following the procedure then
putted the container on a spot that cannot be hit by direct sunlight. In preparation for planting,
I’ve search for plastic containers then I’ve got empty plastic oil containers. During planting, 3
seeds were planted in pure loam soil and the other 3 were planted with mix loam soil and
usual soil. Following the routine, I am watering the plants daily so as not to dry out the plant.
During the last week, I’ve monitored the vegetable plants then I noticed that they
grow up slowly. For the flowers, the roses produced some leaves while the bougainvillea
stayed the same. I’ve got curious on why the bougainvillea doesn’t produce any leaves. And
because of curiosity, I’ve browsed the internet and search on why it happened. I found out the
bougainvillea flowers must be heated by at least 5 hours a day of direct sunlight as the
minimal light required for good bloom. On the other hand, same situation must be applied to
roses as research showed that roses love an open sunny space with no overhanging branches
of trees. However, in the hot climate of summer, partial shade is helpful. So I’ve follow
information about planting and expecting for positive outcome. Monitoring the sunflower
seeds that I kept in a container without putting it in a direct sunlight, the technique doesn’t
work for 6 days, no changes occurred in the sunflower seeds. For the seedlings, I’ve replanted
some of the vegetable seedlings to another pot because the tray had insufficient space for
their roots to spread.
Overall, my mini garden was successful. I’ve maintain the routine for watering. In this
following weeks I will apply organic fertilizer to my plants for faster growth.
