Session 1 Methods (+)

The document outlines tasks for a class session on methods and approaches in English language teaching. It includes tasks that have students discuss how teaching methods affect learning and which methods effective teachers use. It also has students assess their own preferences for teaching methods by completing a questionnaire. The questionnaire results are filled into a table that matches responses to different teaching methods like grammar translation, audio-lingual, communicative language teaching, and task-based learning. Another task has students learn about the characteristics and advantages and disadvantages of various methods by watching a video. They also discuss questions about the nature of language and why there have been so many proposed teaching methods.

Session 1

A brief outline and critique of methods and approaches in ELT

Task 1. Think of what you did or saw done the last time you visited a class. Would you say
the terms to characterize it best were ‘techniques’, ‘approaches’, ‘methods’, or what?

Task 2. Split into groups of six. Discuss the following questions and report the answers to
the class.
1. How teaching methods affect students?
2. What teaching methods do effective teachers use?
3. What do you know about the key characteristics of each method you have listed? What do
teachers and learners do in the classroom, and why?
At this point, do not worry if your knowledge of some of the details is a little hazy!

Task 3. Fill in the following questionnaire to assess your own sympathies for particular
methods. Tick the answer that suits your own style of language teaching best (even if it is
not the one you are supposed to be using). Try to tick only one answer for each question:
