16-17 Orthgraphic and Isometric Projection

This document provides instructions for activities involving engineering drawing plates 16 and 17. It describes conventions for title placement and formatting. It lists materials needed like rulers, pencils, tech pens, and compasses. It provides background on axonometric projections and orthographic projections. It gives specific instructions for plate 16 to draw the isometric view of an object given its orthographic projections, and for plate 17 to draw the orthographic views given an isometric or 3D drawing, including providing dimensions for both plates.

BES 101 – Engineering Drawing and Plans

Activity for Plate #16-#17

Activity Duration: 1 Week

Follow the conventions:

1. Distance of Title from the top corner – 0.5 cm

2. Title: H-1 cm, space between lines and letters-1mm, space between words - 1 cm
3. Vertical distance of tables/objects from the title – 0.5 cm
4. Draw the title and objects placed at the center of the drawing area.

Materials to use:

1. Ruler and protractor

2. Pencil with hardness H or greater (you may use what is available and be sure to erase the guides neatly)
3. Tech pen (Refillable or disposable) with 0.3mm to draw the objects.
4. Tech pen (Refillable or disposable) with 0.5mm to draw the tables and write the title, labels, and descriptions.
5. Compass
6. Sharpener
7. Clean Cloth and brush

AXONOMETRIC PROJECTIONS

It is a type of parallel pictorial projection in which an object appears to be rotated to show its all three
dimensions. Axonometric projections are classified according to how the principal axes are oriented relative
to the projected surface. There may be three types as:
i. Isometric
ii. Dimetric
iii. Trimetric

Methods in creating isometric drawing:

1. Box Method
2. Offset Method
Drawing an Isometric circle
Plate #16: ISOMETRIC DRAWING
1. Given the Orthographic Projection (3 views), draw the corresponding Isometric View of the object. Use 0.5
techpen for the isometric drawing
2. Provide the dimensions of the Isometric Drawing. See plate #17 for the sample. Set a uniform offset distance
of the dimensions from the object. Use 0.3 techpen for the dimesion lines, leaders and labels/numbers.
3. Observe scale of 1cm: 2units
4. You have the freedom to set other parameters in the drawing without instructions.
5. Do not draw the orthographic projections in Plate#16
ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION
✓ a method of projection in which an object is depicted or a surface mapped using parallel lines to
project its shape onto a plane
✓ sometimes orthogonal projection, is a means of representing 3D objects in 2D
✓ six possible views:
a. Top View d. Right View
b. Front view e. Rear view
c. Left View f. Bottom view

Few Examples of Orthographic Projection

Orthographic Projection of Objects with Hole and Curved Surface

Different Methods of Projecting Views

Plate #17: ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION

1. Given the 3D projection or isometric drawing of an object, draw its corresponding Orthographic Projections
(Top View, Front View, Right/Left Side View). You may use any methods of projecting views. Use 0.5mm
techpen for the projection drawing. Use 0.3mm techpen for the projection lines.
2. Provide the dimensions of the projections. See plate #16 for the sample. Set a uniform offset distance of
the dimensions from the object. Use 0.3 techpen for the dimesion lines, leaders and labels/numbers. There is
no need to write lables of the projection lines’ length and angle.
3. Observe scale of 1cm: 2units
4. You have the freedom to set other parameters in the drawing without instructions.
5. Do not draw the Isometric Drawing in Plate#17
