R 3-12
Oxidation Procedure
This procedure is designed to oxidize a fully-reduced 100 ft3 bed of Catalyst R 3-12 in approx. 24
hours. Higher or lower space velocities will result in shorter or longer oxidation times. However,
-1
the gas flow (Air + N2) should be at least 30,000 SCFH (GHSV=300 hr ) to insure good gas
distribution and an efficient oxidation.
1. Establish a N2 flow of 30,000 SCFH, then begin dosing air at a rate of 700 SCFH. This
gives an inlet O2 concentration of approx. 0.5 vol%, which should result in a maximum
(theoretical) temperature rise of 50°C / 90°F. (Hold N2 at 30,000 SCFH until Step 4.)
2. Gradually increase the air flow to 1,400 SCFH (1 vol% O2) over a 1-hr period, and hold
for 8 hours.
3. Gradually increase the air flow to 2,800 SCFH (2 vol% O2) over at least a 1-hr period, not
allowing reactor temp's to exceed 225°C / 435°F; hold for 4 hours.
4. Increase air flow to 15,000 SCFH while backing out the N2 flow down to 15,000 SCFH,
taking care that the reactor temperature does not exceed 225°C / 435°F. When these
flows are established the inlet O2 concentration will be 10-11 vol%.
5. Hold the 10-11 vol% O2 (15,000 SCFH air, 15,000 SCFH N2) until the reaction diminishes
as evidenced by dropping temperatures and the O2 level in the outlet coming up to the
same level as at the inlet (10-11 vol%).
6. Gradually back the N2 flow down to zero and increase the air flow to 30,000 SCFH. Hold
this for 1 hour to complete the oxidation step.
7. If the bed is spent, the catalyst should be cooled to < 50°C / 120°F before being dumped.
If the bed is to be placed back in service, it should be purged with N2 to remove the O2
-1
(an 8-hour purge at a GHSV of at least 300 hr is recommended to free the bed of
oxygen), then kept under a N2 blanket until put on-stream.
The above procedure can be adapted for other bed sizes by scaling the gas flows up or down in
direct proportion to the bed volume. The temperature program and O2 concentration profile is
the same for all bed sizes.
