Reading Non-textbook Based

A. Read the following story. Write True or False for each statement below.

From Rags to Riches

Have you ever felt like giving up after being rejected time and again? Well, Colonel Sanders did not!
If the name rings a bell, it is because he was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, also known as
KFC. This man took every failure as a reason to work harder.
Sanders was born on 9 September 1890. His father passed away when he was only six years
old and he had to take care of his younger siblings. Then, in seventh grade, Sanders dropped out of
school and left home to work on a farm. At sixteen, he enlisted in the United States army. After being
released from the army, he worked as a labourer for a while before losing the job due to a fight with
his colleague. He then studied law but was unable to complete his studies. After that, he moved in

with his mother and worked as an insurance salesman. However, he lost his job again!
Sanders refused to feel disappointed. He started to venture into a few businesses by franchising
his fried chicken recipe. His fried chicken recipe was rejected 1,009 times before it was accepted
by restaurants. Now, Sanders’s fried chicken is famous worldwide and known as ‘Kentucky Fried
Chicken’.
It took many years of failures before Sanders finally made it. KFC has expanded internationally
and been sold for USD2 million (which is worth RM15 million today). Sanders remains as the centre
of KFC’s branding with his face appearing on the logo. His goatee, white shirt and western string tie
continue to symbolise KFC.
Sanders passed away from pneumonia at the age of 90. At that time, there were 6,000 KFC
locations in 48 countries around the world. He has left behind a legacy of delicious fried chicken due
to his persistence.

B. Did you enjoy reading this story? Why? LS: 3.2.1 Evaluation

Yes, I enjoyed reading this story because it was very interesting. I did not know how hard
Colonel Sanders had to work in order to become successful.

We need money to survive in our daily life. With money, we can pay bills, buy things and grow our
savings. If you are always short of money, you should consider ways to supplement your income or
allowance. You can achieve this by having a part-time job or selling things to earn money.
A common part-time job for teenagers is babysitting. This job is suitable if you love children and are a
responsible person. You could ask your parents’ friends or neighbours if they need help babysitting their
children. Another job to consider is gardening. This includes mowing the lawn, raking leaves or watering
plants for elderly neighbours.
Do you enjoy doing housework? Then you can also offer to help clean houses for a fee. Many people
do not have time to clean their homes. They would willingly pay you to help them do the household chores.
Tutoring your schoolmates is another way to earn extra money. You can tutor your schoolmate either at
the library or their home.
If you enjoy making crafts, then you could sell them online. You could come up with your own online
store or sell your crafts using online craft stores. Over the years, you might have collected a lot of
things such as books, clothes and toys. Instead of throwing them away, why not have a yard sale?
These are just a few ways to earn money. Find the perfect one that suits you. A little bit of
extra money goes a long way to cover your expenses.
