STATEMENT OF PURPOSE (JAMIU JABARU)

The zeal to broaden my knowledge and eagerness to contribute to solving some of the Data
associated problems faced by industries today is the reason I aspire to pursue a Master’s degree in
Data Science at your institution. I am a second-class upper division graduate of Mathematics with
honors from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

In my final year at the University of Port Harcourt, I had a research work experience on ‘’The
Comparative Studies to Solution of a Partial Differential Equation’’ using some analytical methods of
solution such as; the characteristics method, the separation of a variable method, and the Alembert
method with some boundary value conditions. This undergraduate research work furnished me
with the idea of balancing collaborative and individual work and has made me determined in this
area of interest. Most notably, this has been crucial for my graduate study aspiration.

Upon the completion of my first degree, I have been involved in a volunteer part-time teaching job
for the past four and a half years where I have been coaching students to excel in various qualifying
exams such as; the West African examination council (WAEC), Joint Admission Matriculation Board
(JAMB), Standardized American Test (SAT).

In the course of my volunteer work, I enrolled in a training school where I completed a nine-month
training in data analysis and learned some of the techniques used to analyze data. This includes the
use of python programming language to analyze some sets of data in a real-world situation. More
significantly, my quest for knowledge has led to my aspiration to broaden my understanding of this
area of interest as well as to have an insight into the real-world application of Data Science in
solving some of its related problems faced by industries.

Furthermore, I wish to study for a master’s program in Data Science in an institution that allows
students to further their education while allowing them to have industrial experience alongside
their studies. Remarkably, the flexibility offered by Birkbeck university which is aimed at allowing
students to have work experience while studying is what interests me the most in choosing this
institution. Undoubtedly, Birkbeck university is a prestigious university that is ranked among the
top institution in the UK; Birkbeck university’s graduates are recognized and highly valued by
employers for their leadership traits, accountability, prudence, focus, and determination to be in a
management position which is why I chose the institution for this program.

Also, being a graduate of mathematics with a strong grasp in most of the undergraduate courses, I,
therefore, believe that my educational background has instilled in me the qualities required to meet
the rigor of this demanding course, and subsequently, the profession. I bring along with me a strong
grasp of fundamentals in Mathematics, unique and relevant work experience, a passion to learn, a
yearning for teamwork and leadership, and a fervor for surmounting challenges. Hence, I sincerely
hope that I qualify for all the requirements for admission into your Graduate Program and that my
application is favorably received by the admission committee.

After my study, I would proceed to take up a data science job in one of the industries to enable me
to contribute significantly to the field as well as fulfill my career goals.
