Chapter 1
Introduction/ Background of the Study
The First Semester 2021 poverty incidence
among population, or the proportion of poor
Filipinos whose per capita income is not sufficient to
meet their basic food and non-food needs, was
estimated at 23.7 percent. This translates to 26.14
million Filipinos who lived below the poverty
threshold estimated at Php 12,082, on the average,
for a family of five per month in the first semester of
2021. For me, poverty is one of the difficult
problems that we cannot solve because of
irresponsible people. That's why employment is
important to a family, especially to those who have a
family of 4 and more. One does not need to be an
economist to conclude that low-quality employment,
inequality and poverty are big issues in the
Philippines. The problems are obvious even to a
casual observer. However, one needs economic
analysis to determine the causes of poor labor
market outcomes, and to suggest remedies.

Significance of the study
It’s important to know what is the significance of
employment to our lives of course. Because
employment contributes to economic growth.
The results of the study will be of great benefits to
the following:
a. Government – They’ll be aware of how low
Filipino’s wages are.
b.Students – This study might be helpful for
students to know more about this topic.
c. Citizens – This study might be helpful for the
citizens to know more about the significance of
work.

1. One of the reasons why Filipinos are poor is
because some of them are unable to read and
write. Due to poor family planning, family
grows bigger which makes it hard for them to
earn a living and often times become totally
flat broke.
1.1 People only employ who have a college
degrees.
1.2 Spending more than a hundred pesos for a cup
coffee or spending thousands of pesos just for
a single shirt.

Review of Related Literature
Work is an important part of people’s lives. It
means more than just getting paid. It means being
able to make your own choices about how you want
to live your life. Work helps you gain a sense of
pride and self-satisfaction by reaffirming that you
can support yourself. With work, you earn money to
cover bills and pay for activities in your leisure time.
Yet, work has not been accessible to some members
of society, including many individuals with visual
impairments (i.e., those who are blind or have low
vision). We have all heard that “70% of people with
visual impairments are unemployed.”
There are over 5.6 million Filipino families living
in poverty as of 2022, according to findings of the
Listahanan 3 survey released by the Department of
Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The rise
in the number of poor families was mainly due to job
losses triggered by the pandemic.
