Capstone Project

I am amazed at how much I learned about myself throughout the last few weeks in this

course. Throughout the assessments, videos, content, and TBW course work I have learned new

ways to engage in conversation with people of diverse backgrounds. The importance of starting

dialogue for better understanding of one another and how everyone including myself has some

level of bias of which can be improved by simply acknowledging it.

I am committed to improving my cultural mindset by keeping an open mind to

conversations, experiences, and relationships. I plan to challenge what I know about others by

creating dialogue, asking questions, and remain open to the responses regardless of the topic. I

will seek to understand other points of view, perspective, and reason for their motivation or

passions. This is important to me because I understand that communication is key to learning

about other cultures, people, and ideas. I want to be an individual that can remain neutral in

any place or situation. Growth in my cultural mindset will allow me to explore and learn from

others, including learn more about myself and what drives my mindset. Growth in my cultural

mindset within my organization will allow me to keep diversity on the forefront and make it a

goal to remain inclusive and welcoming workplace.

An area of weakness I learned about myself that holds a lot of opportunity for

improvement is my personal biases. I did not realize my closed mindedness was disabling my

ability for personal growth. I did not intend to have those biases, but I realized throughout the

course that I tend to avoid certain individuals that are highly religious. I am not religious, but I

am spiritual, therefore, that is one area that I know we should have in common. As I learned

the coursework, the challenging part of biases is how we manage our own perspectives,

attitude, and ability to engage in meaningful dialogue to encourage understanding and discover

common ground (2019). My goal will be push myself towards being a better listener to help my

understanding of others. As the text explains, I will intentionally get to know people, spend

time with them, and learn who they are and what their values are (Nahavandi, 2022, p. 388). On

the ICMI assessment I learned that my parochial mindset was average. According to the

assessment, this indicates that I have less interest in learning more about other cultures,

including my own, seeking cultural experiences, and engaging with diverse cultures. With that

knowledge, I added a life goal to broaden my cultural experiences by incorporating travel to see

and learn how others live in different regions and parts of the world. I also want to make sure I

incorporate what I learned through the course into my work life. I have gained useful

information that transfers well with my career and organizational goals. I will use what I learned

to recruit differently moving forward and attempt to create a balanced workplace.

A few areas that were high indicators of a positive cultural mindset include my

metacognition score. This means I am very capable of understanding my own thinking style

with self-reflection. My plural mindset was a seventy-two which is the maximum score on the

assessment. This indicates a view of culture that considers all cultures to be of equal value. My

cultural curiosity score was also exceedingly high. This simply shows that I have an interest in

learning about culture and a willingness to engage with unfamiliar cultures. There were other

sections that scored well within the positive cultural mindset which tells me that I am at a point

in life where I could move forward with some of my cultural mindset goals and achieve them. I

also believe I am becoming a strong leader. According to the text, a leader is any person who
4

influences individuals and groups within an organization, helps them establish goals, and guides

them toward achievement of those goals, thereby allowing them to be effective (Nahavandi,

2022, p. 3). In the past few months, I have been promoted to support my own region and I was

given a lead role in our company’s benefit administration. Two huge steps forward that come

with many responsibilities for our employees.

My strategy to achieve my cultural mindset goals will include short and long-term or

lifelong goals. My short-term goals to expand my mindset involve attending cultural festivities,

watching films, reading, and becoming more involved in volunteering. I learned that

volunteering has some surprising ways of teaching you about other cultures. My long-term

goals include learning of other cultures by travelling, becoming involved with a cultural group

different than my own, and practicing engaging in dialogue with everyone.
