Switch Stacking10

Removing a switch from a stack requires ensuring the remaining switches will not be isolated. For ring topologies this is always possible, but serial and cascade topologies are not fault tolerant - removing a middle switch could isolate others. Check the stack-port error counters to confirm the switches can still communicate around the one being removed. In this example, removing the top switch leaves the bottom two connected, so the criteria is met.

Removing Switch from a Stack

If a switch has to be removed from the stack, check that members of the stack will not become isolated when it is
removed. If switches are congured in a ring stack topology, and then no members can be isolated. Serial and cascade
stack topologies, however, are not fault tolerant. Other switches may become isolated when a switch is removed from the
middle of the stack.

To ensure that a stack in a ring topology can establish a communication path around the member to-be-removed, check
the stack-port error counters.

In this example, the top switch is being removed from the stack. The other two switches in the stack still have a
communication path with one another (the solid line), so the removal criteria has been met.
