1. Speak About the Photo: Sample answer This photo shows an urban landscape covered in colorful graffiti,
likely because it has been left abandoned. While the easy to reach surfaces, such as street-level walls and
garage doors, are fully covered with artistic lettering and various graphics, the graffiti artists seem to be
expanding their artwork to more hard to reach places like windows, rooftops and high-story walls. The lone
area that still has a significant amount of unused space is the tall yellow building that could have once been a
large public high school. However, because around half of it has already been painted, I imagine the rest soon
will be as well. This particular part of the city differs greatly from the clean, standard-looking buildings in the
background which give the impression that this is at least a mid-sized city with a healthy economy.

2. Read, Then Speak: Sample answer I recently learned to cook. I used to hate cooking, and while I could
make a few basic things, I wasn’t really any good at it. Honestly, I'd never taken any cooking lessons nor
followed recipes correctly, so it's no wonder I was bad. I’ve always been a fan of taking classes online, so last
month I thought it would be good for me to take an online cooking course. So I did some research, got out my
credit card, and paid for a class I thought was going to be worth it. Former students had written fantastic
reviews about it and so I was excited to begin the class. The teacher went through all the basics, from the
essential equipment that all home chefs need, to basic knife skills. Every class left me more and more
confident. Over the past month,I have started to experiment and making increasingly complex dishes. I can’t
say everything has been a success, but that one online course has really helped me to make nice homemade
food for my family.

Sample Answer: Nowadays, there are ample choices available in the market when it comes to career options.
If I had to choose one particular job among many that I would not like to do, I suppose it would be a sales job.
Once I worked as a salesman for a computer company, and I really hated it.When I work in the sales
department for that company as an intern. Initially, I was very enthusiastic about calling people and selling
them the computers. But right away I figured out that it was an incredibly stressful job for me. I'm an introvert,
so meeting lots of strangers every day makes me very anxious. I have a lot of respect for sales workers,
especially successful ones. They have a lot of determination and patience for their job. But I believe I don’t
have the skillset or personality for a sales job in the future.

Question: Describe a book that you read at school. What was the book? Did you enjoy reading it?
Sample Answer: One book I remember reading at school was Animal Farm, by George Orwell. The first time I
read it, at around age 12, it seemed like a fun, interesting story about farm animals getting together to run
their own farm. I enjoyed reading it with the class; however, I remember the teacher trying to get us to think
deeply about the underlying messages, which wasn't that fun. Many years later, I read this same book for
pleasure and finally understood the political views that my teacher had tried to teach us. After studying other
subjects like Russian history and political science, I could finally see the parallels between the farm animals
and human societies today. I'm glad that my teacher chose this book for us to read.

5. Read, Then Write: Sample answer There are a lot of things that make a great city. Firstly, affordable and
efficient transportation is vital for being able to move around and enjoy the city. Additionally, easy access to
parks and nature that people can visit on weekends such as mountains and beaches. Another important
factor to consider is the cost of housing. Sadly, the cost of housing in many of the great cities in the world
today is too high. To sum up, in my opinion, a great city has a good mix of things to do, places to go, and
affordable housing.

Chinese New Year. This is the occasion that people celebrate with great joy, hope, and festivity with their

awesome year ahead. Many people believe that red is considered the lucky color for the new year. That’s why
people often choose to dress in vivid color as a way to eliminate bad luck and welcome good things. My
country also has some unique traditions like lucky money, preparing homemade food, or decorating home in
the first days of the year. It is also a good time for family reunions and New Year resolutions.

2. Writing Sample: Sample answer When choosing a company to work for, there are few things more
important to consider than the size of the company. Typically big companies offer higher salaries and have a
bigger corporate ladder to climb, which could lead to a higher salary and more responsibilities. On the other
hand, at a small company, an individual can make more of an impact. At small companies, your ideas and hard
work have a bigger impact on the long-term success of the company, which can feel very rewarding. These are
some differences between working for a big company and a small one.
