In this lab, you will be using the vclient machine to complete your objectives. You will
be performing the following tasks:

1. Migrate virtual machines with vSphere Storage vMotion

2. Create a VMkernel port group for vSphere vMotion Migration
3. Verify that your ESXi host meets vSphere vMotion requirements
4. Verify that your virtual machines meet vSphere vMotion requirements
5. Perform a vMotion migration of a virtual machine on a Shared Datastore

Lab 13: Migrating Virtual Machines

1 Migrate Virtual Machine Files with vSphere Storage vMotion

In this task, you will migrate a virtual machine onto another datastore while it is running
using vSphere Storage vMotion.

1. Click on the vclient graphic on the topology page.

2. Log into the vclient VM as vclient using the password vmware123.
3. Open the Chrome web browser by clicking on the icon at the bottom corner of
the window.

4. Click Advanced, followed by clicking on Proceed to 172.16.1.1 on the warning

page.

If you experience the “vSphere Client web server is initializing” message, please
wait an additional 2-3 minutes and refresh the page to continue.

You may ignore the “browser-OS combination” warning message presented on

the VMware vCenter Single Sign-On page and continue moving forward with the
lab.

5. Login with the username admin and the password vmware.

6. On the Home tab, click on the Hosts and Clusters icon in the Inventories section.

3 Verify that Your ESXi Host Meets vMotion Requirements

In this task, you will verify that your ESXi hosts meet vMotion requirements.

1. In the Object Navigator pane, select your esxi-1.vmeduc.com host and click its
Summary tab.
2. View the Processor Type information to verify that the CPUs are compatible.

3. In the Object Navigator pane, select your esxi-2.vmeduc.com host and click its
Summary tab.
4. View the Processor Type information to verify that the CPUs are compatible.
5. For each of your hosts, verify the following:

proceed to Step 6. If your esxi-2 host is listed, skip to Step 7.
6. In order to remedy the situation, you must add the iSCSI Software Adapter to
esxi-2 and add the san VM as a target. Hint: Click on esxi-2 in the inventory
when viewing Hosts and Clusters, get to the Manage tab and the Storage page,
and then “add” Software iSCSI adapter. Set the Target to 172.16.1.99 with the
default port of 3260 and Inherit settings from parent. Then rescan the adapter.
Return to Step 5d.
7. Since both hosts are listed on the Connectivity and Multipathing page, your hosts
meet vSphere vMotion requirements.
