The Total creep length required as per Bligh's Creep Theory is given by
L=CxH = 48 mts

Length of the Down stream apron is given by

L2= 2.21x Cx (V H/10) = 16.77 mts

Provide 22.5 mts long downstream apron

Length of the Pier is 2.5 mts
Thus, Length of the upstream apron will be 11.00 mts

Provide 8.00 mts long upstream apron

Design of Pier:
1. Unit Weight of Concrete = 2.40 tonnes/Sqmt
2. Velocity of flow during High flood= 2.62 m/sec
3. Pier Height = 3.50 m
4. square portion= 1.60 m
5. Curved portion= 0.45 m
6. Width of pier = 0.90 m

For calculating stresses only the straight portion of the pier will be considered.
1. Stress at base due to self weight:
self weight of the pier = ((1.60x0.9) + (3.14/4 x 0.90)) x3.50x2.40 = 18.03
Compressive stress at base = 18.03/( 0.9 x 1.60)( 3.14/4 x 0.9) = 8.40

2. Effect of Buoyancy:
During High flood and when bandhara is closed, submerged volume of the
pier= 0.9x1.60x3.50= 5.04 cum
Stress at base due to buoyancy = 5.04x1.0/(0.9x1.6)= 3.5

3. Stress due to Hydrostatic force:

Hydrostatic force when bandhara is close and no water on
downstream side = 1.0x3.52 x2.90 = 17.76 tonnes
2
Moment due to hydrostatic pressure = 17.76 x (3.50/3) =
Stress = M/Z= (30.93/(0.9X1.62 )/6 = 53.97 T/Sqm

4. Stress due to water current:

Intensity of pressure = 52KV2
Where = K= Constant depending upon shape of the pier (0.66 for Semi- Circular cut water)
V= Velocity of flow = 2.62 m/sec.
Therfore, Intensity of pressure = 235.586 Kg/Sqm
Force due to water when flow is parallel to the pier = 0.74
This force acts at a distance of (2/3) from the base.
Moment= 0.74x (2/3)x 3.5 = 1.73 T-m
strees= M/Z = (1.73/(0.9x 1.62 )/6 4.51 t/sqm
If the current varies direction varies by 20 degrees
Then Pressure parallel to the pier = 235.59xCos 20 = 221.3786
Pressure perpendicular to the pier = 235.59x sin 20= 80.58
Force Parallel to the pier = 0.9 x3.50x (221.4/1000)= 0.70
acting at ( 2/3) height above the base.

stress at base = M/Z =

M = 0.7x(2/3) x 3.5 = 1.63
Z= ( 0.9X 1.62 )/6 = 0.38

Stress at Base = 4.24 T/Sqm

Force perpendicular to pier = ( 80.58/1000)x1.6x3.5 = 0.45

stress at the base = M/Z

M= 0.45x(2/3)x 3.5= 1.05
Z= (1.6 x 0.92 )/6 = 0.22

Stress at Base = 4.87 t/Sqm

Thus, Maximum stress due to water current = (4.24+4.87)=

Summary of Stresses :-

2 Buoyancy 3.5
3 Hydrostatic
Forces 53.97
4 Water Current
Max. Stress 8.40 86.14
Min. Stress 8.40 74.94

Maximum Compressive stress = 86.14 t/sqm 0.86 N/sqmm

Allowable Compressive Stress for M20 grade concrete 5.00
Since Max Compressive Stress < Allowable Compressive stress, Hence Safe.

Max. Tensile Stress = 74.94 t/Sqm 0.74 N/Sqmm

Allowable Tensile Stress = 10% Compressive Stress = 10% of 5.00 N/Sqmm

Since Max Tensile Stress > Allowable Tensile Stress.

Therefore, Provide Nominal Reiforcement of 12 Tor @ 200mm c/c.
