Review of Related Literature

Lantana is an invasive kind of plant. It is a very attractive plant although its invasiveness
may spread affecting the surrounding plants (Patrick, J., 2007). Oftentimes it is disregarded
because of its strong smell. Nevertheless, its invasiveness results to its abundance in nature. In
2012, Queen Elizabeth II by Bond No. 9 was launched as a floral fragrance for women (Van der
Weerd, B., et al., 2016). The perfume utilized Lantana leaves together with dry dates and nutmeg
as the top notes of its fragrance.

The Lantana plant is rich in antioxidant activity, which protects the skin from free
radicals, molecules from the environment that damages the skin by clinging to the collagen and
weakening elasticity. Antioxidants wipe those free radicals to prevent damage to the skin. Not
only does antioxidants protect the skin from damage, some also brightens the skin, calms
irritation and smoothen fine lines (Metzger, C., 2018).

There are a lot of extraction methods for essential oils, one would be steam distillation. It
is widely used to extract because of its effectivity. Steam distillation is the separation process
used to purify or isolate temperature-sensitive materials. The goal is to separate components by
using heat at temperatures below their point of decomposition. The principle behind it is that
when heat is applied to two immiscible liquids it becomes agitated and each surface releases
their own vapor pressure as if it is the only component present thus, the vapor pressure of the
system increases until it begins to boil (Helmenstine, A.M., 2019).

In mixing a salve or lip balm, the factor that affects the texture the most is the amount of
beeswax or the ratio of the oil to the beeswax in general (Rayma, M., 2014). According to an
organic beauty recipes blog entry (2020), a way to make a moisturizer with beeswax is by
combining and melting the ingredients with a double boiler on low heat. After it melts, it is
transferred to a container with cold water and instantly mixed to have the right texture.
