LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Background Information for Learners:

This lesson contains information on the step-by-step procedure of basic Manicure and Pedicure
services. By following these steps, you can create different designs from the basic to the more
complicated nail designs.

This will also help you to develop and acquire skills about the proper care of the hands and
finger nails as well as proper care of feet and toe nails.

Having knowledge about the structures of nail as well as its diseases and disorders are also very
much important when it comes to giving nail services such as manicure and pedicure. When giving
nail services, always keep in mind to have safety precautions and sanitation procedures at all times to
prevent accidents or injury and to protect you and your client.
Providing consultation form is also necessary to gather information that will help the salon
deliver exceptional service. Consultations also create a rapport with clients and help you select the
most appropriate nail care services

What is consultation?
✓ Consultation is the process of discussing something with someone in order to get their
advice or opinion about it.
✓ The act of exchanging information and opinions about something in order to reach a
better understanding of it or to make a decision, or a meeting for this purpose.

Different consultation techniques used to identify treatment objectives in nail care services;
1. Questioning – Ask the client questions about the type of look they would like to achieve and the
condition of their nails.
2. It’s useful to ask the client if the manicure is for an occasion and what outfit they plan to wear.
This information will be useful during color selection.
3. Visual – Examine the client’s nails and discuss the products we intend to use.
4. Manual – Paper consultation forms can be used to gather and record information. If we are
treating a returning client we can also refer to the clients record card and update when
necessary.

Knowing the Importance of Nail Structure

1. The main structure that you will work with when applying a manicure is the nail. It is a
transparent plate that protects the tips of fingers, toes, and the nail bed.
2. It is an appendage of the skin. It is important to know the different parts of the nail.

2
3. Knowledge of the nail structure will enable you to identify the condition of the nail you will
need to identify whether a nail is healthy or unhealthy.
4. You will also need to know which parts of the nail are responsible for growth, protection, nail
shape and size.
5. The technical name for the nail is Onyx (On-iks). It is composed of laminated layers of
protein called keratin

Structure of a Nail

The nail consists of three parts: nail body, nail root and free edge

• Nail Body or Nail Plate - visible portion of the nail that is attached to the nail bed.
• Free edge - end portion of the nail plate which extends beyond the fingertip. It is shaped
during manicure.
• Nail root - beginning of nail found at the base and is embedded underneath the skin.

Structures Beneath the Nail

The structures beneath the nail include the nail bed, matrix and lunula.

• Nail Bed – the skin upon which the nail body or nail plate rests. It is supplied with many blood
vessels and nerves. The blood vessels supply nourishment for the nail.
• Matrix – part of the nail bed which contains nerves and blood vessels and is located beneath
the nail root. It produces cells that generate and harden the nail and will continue to grow as
long as it receives nutrition and remains in a healthy condition.
• Lunula – halfmoon shape found at the base of the nail where the matrix connects with the nail
bed.

Structures Surrounding the Nail

The structures surrounding the nail include the cuticle, eponychium, hyponychium,
perionychium, nail walls and nail grooves

• Cuticle - the overlapping skin around the nail. A normal cuticle should be loose and pliable.
• Eponychium - cuticle extension at the base of the nail body which partly overlaps the lunula
• Hyponychium – portion of the skin under the free edge of the nail.
• Nail Walls – folds of the skin overlapping the sides of the nail
• Nail Grooves - are slits or tracks in the skin at the side of the nail upon which the nail moves as
it grows.
• Mantle – deep fold of the skin in which the nail root is embedded

3
Characteristics of Healthy Nails
• Healthy nails are smooth,
• They don’t have pits or grooves.
• They're uniform in color and consistency
• They are free of spots or discoloration

Nail Conditions – refer to any nail diseases or disorders of the nail.

Examples of nail conditions:

➢Brittle Nails – nails appear crumbly. This is often due to ageing or long term exposure to
chemicals and water.
➢Discolored Nails – nails can turn yellow in color or have yellow patches. Often a result of a
fungal infection although there are other causes.
➢Half white half brown nails – nails appear brown at the tip and white at the bed. This is a sign
of kidney infection.
➢White Nails – the nail appears white and the reason is not because it has become
detached from the nail bed this is likely to be a fungal infection.
➢Thickened Nails – nail appears thicker than usual and often darker in color. This is common in
older people or where there had been prolonged pressure on the nail
➢Overgrown Nails – nails are very long and sometimes curl underneath the fingers.
➢Loose Nail – the nail lifts from the nail bed. Usually after injury.
➢Indented Nails – this is known as koilonychia. The nail dips in the middle like a spoon does.
➢Grooves across the finger nails – this usually occurs after illness.
➢Destroyed Nails – nail appears black, this happens if the nail experiences a trauma.

How to treat nail conditions

1. Antibiotics for bacterial infections

2. Antifungal preparations, mainly oral tablets, for fungal infections in the nails

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Background Information for Learners:

The implementation of manicure and pedicure services should be best applied to patron’s
fingernails and toenails when the hands and feet are done cleaning and sanitizing. It is very vital to
ensure the cleanliness of the hand and foot before giving them any procedure in manicure and pedicure
for safety and health reasons. One of these is to get away from germs and other bacteria that might cause
nail disorders or diseases. Another is to make the hand and feet feel comfortable and relax during the
entire process of manicuring and pedicuring services, because the tools, materials and equipment were
also sanitized and sterilized. Thus, it is important to remind the manicurist to practice safety measures
and sanitation to any activities in nail care services. Here are some ways to avoid germs and bacteria.

➢ Cleaning physically removes germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces of hand or other
objects by using soap (or detergent) and water.
This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the
risk of spreading infection.
➢ Sanitizing is defined as cleaning something to make it free of bacteria or disease causing
elements. An example of sanitizing is using alcohol or hand sanitizer on hands to lessen the
germs or bacteria
➢ Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill
germs on surfaces or objects. Example is using Lysol.
This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a
surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
After all the considerations in cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting of the hand and foot, the
procedure in cleaning nails are now ready for fingernails and toenails.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Background Information for Learners:

NAIL SHAPES

Nails are the appendages of the skin that get most eye catching part of one’s hands. It
can make them look extremely beautiful or even ugly. It also tells about your hygiene and
maintenance. Chewed and dirt-filled are two things that everyone wants to avoid, especially
girls. Realizing this need of people on daily basis, the beauty market came up with something
known as nail-spa. This is the place where people can get any sort of beautifying treatment for
their hands and feet.

The nails have varied shapes. . Shapes refer to the external form, contours, or outline
of someone or something like the nail. Thus, before you start to work on your client’s nails,
both of you should agree on the best nail shape. It should conform to that of the fingertips for
a more natural effect. People who perform work mostly with their hands prefer to have a shorter
nails to avoid breakage and injury.

You should examine the hands of your client and its condition before starting. If you
notice some disorder, prepare nail repair. You should provide your client protective
materials/supplies for hygienic purposes.

Are you aware of your nail shape? Do you know your ideal nail shape for your desired
manicure? Now is the time for you to discover the different types of nail shapes.

WHAT YOU NEED IN SHAPING NAILS?

1. Grit Emery Board or a Glass Nail File

2. Dust Brush or a piece of cotton
(*Please avoid using a metal file as it can damage the nail)

STEPS IN FILING NAILS:

20
Filing is the easiest way to shape your nails neatly without causing splits or cracks on nails,
and looks fancy too. Learn how to file nails and enjoy creating various nail shapes!

1. Hold the emery board lightly between your thumb and index finger. Don’t grasp it
2. Keep the emery board at a 45 degree angle at all times
3. Start filing the Free Edge of the nail in one direction. Do not file backwards and forward
4. Remove dust to finish
Types of Nail Shape

Round

As one of the most conservative shapes of the bunch,

the round shape is ideal for men and those who like to
maintain short nails. This shape is flattering for
wide nails, and gives the illusion of a thinner nail bed.
File the side walls straight like a square, then round the
free edge into that perfect swooping circle.

Square
This shape is referred to a classic shape. The square is
ideal for a bigger nail bed (it tends to make smaller nail
beds look shorter and wider).

To create this timeless shape, file the side walls straight

and make sure they're perpendicular to the free edge of
the nail. Once you've got the perfect square, angle your
emery board and bevel the nail.

Oval
The tapered side walls of the oval create an elegant
shape for women. Oval shapes flatter both wide and
narrow nail beds, and add length with a graceful tip.

To achieve the perfect oval shape, file side walls

straight to make sure they are even. Then, shape the side
walls into a rounded oval, making sure the
angles are even on each side.

21
Square Oval (Squoval)
Combining the elegance of the oval with the strength of
the square, the squoval is a popular nail shape for most
fingers.

First begin with a square with straight and even side

walls. File the corners until your free edge is rounded
and beveled. Remember, you still want strong side
supports—don't go too file-happy.

Almond/Point

The pointed nail is a popular style for acrylic and nail

art designs, especially in Eastern Europe and Asia. And
while it's not favored for the everyday look, this extreme
shape can actually slenderize and lengthen the fingers.
File the side walls evenly and taper until you've reached
the desired tip.

Deciding Your Shape

How do you decide which nail shape is right for you? If your nail beds are wide, try a squoval
shape. If they are narrow, try a sharp square shape to widen and strengthen. If you keep short
nails, a rounded shape is your best bet for low-maintenance style. You can also look at the
lunula (the half-moon shape on your nail bed) for nail-shaping guidance. If it's more curved,
try oval or rounded.

HOW TO FILE FINGER NAILS AND TOE NAILS?

1. File down the free edge to the length you like. Keep the 45 degree angle
and file in one direction only.

22
2. Gently file under
the both sides of the free
edge to straighten. Always towards the
free edge

3. File both corners of the free edge to make them smooth and round

4. Continue filing to make the perfect length

5. Remove dust with a dust brush or a piece of gauze to finish

23
BUFFING

Buffing can improve the appearance of the nails by reducing a dull cloudy look and adding shine onto
them. It can be done to smoothen the surface of the fingernails and toenails. A well filed and buffed
nails can help a lot to make attractive nail shapes.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR TOENAIL BUFFING

1. 3 Way Buffer or Sponge Block Buffer

2. Cuticle Oil – only if you’re not going to apply nail polish after buffing
3. Cotton or Dust Brush

HOW TO BUFF TOENAILS – TECHNIQUE

1. A buffer consists of 3 parts. We’ll call each of them Part A, B and C.

24
2. Buffing will help improve the appearance of the toenails by reducing a dull
cloudy look
and adding some shine onto them.

3. Buff the sides of the nail as well, using a corner of the buffer. Buff until the entire nail
becomes cloudy.

4. You can remove the burr edge created from filing by buffing the end of the free
edge as
well.

5. Using the smoother part of the buffer (Part B), repeat step 2 and 3.

25
6. Using the smoothest part of the buffer (Part C), repeat step 2 and 3 until the
toenail

becomes shiny.

7. Once you have buffed all toenails, remove dust with a damp gauze.

8. If you are NOT going to

apply nail polish, apply
Cuticle Oil onto the cuticle
line and massage into the skin and the toenails. This will rehydrate the skin and
the toenails.

(Reminder: Buffing can be best applied to nails with disorders)

How important is shaping the nails?

is why there are so many different shapes to choose from, we are all different and like different
things! Nail shapes change throughout time because people become more daring in what they
do with their nails.

26
amazing nails you want to show off. And when you’ve mastered that, you can move on to
wearing all the stunning DIY nail trends that are actually way easier than you thought.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Background Information for Learners:

Hand and foot massage, as part of the nail care service, can satisfy a client’s need for
a caring and nurturing touch. It focuses around the muscles located within the hand and foot.
Good hand or foot massage usually incorporates four basic massage techniques: effleurage
(long, gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading movements that press and roll the muscles under
the hand or fingers), friction (a light or firm rubbing back and forth of the hands across the
skin), and pressure point (direct pressure on a hard, knotted spot). A massage should always
begin and end with effleurage. The most important principle of massage is that the strokes
should always be toward the heart, because the most distal points from the heart are the hands
and feet, so stroking toward the heart helps increase the circulation and remove toxins.”
As a general rule, start the massage lightly to warm up the tissues and get them ready;
then each stroke can go deeper, stretching the muscle and bringing in endorphins. A
minimum of three strokes over every area is the rule for massage, so spending 10 minutes on
both hands or both feet would be very effective.

Here are the steps in hand massage:

1. Apply a blend of massage oil and moisturizer

2. Cover lower arm, hand and fingers with oil

3. Start with effleurage massage movements

3
4. Warm up the skin using effleurage
movements

5. Move into circular thumb frictions up the arm

6. Turn the arm over face down

7. Knead the muscle

8. Lightly trace the figure 8 around the wrist bones

9. Slide down to the hand near the thumb

10. Massage in between the thumb and index

finger

11. Massage between the fingers along

4
Metacarpals

12. Massage each finger in circular movement

13. Then “link” to the next finger without

breaking contact

14. Perform rotations both ways on each finger

15. Bend the hand up client rests on elbow

16. Massage the client’s palm

17. Use your thumbs, use big sweeping

movements

18. Massage the padding of the thumb

19. Massage the finger padding in circular

movements

20. Finish the palm with final big sweeping

movements

5
21. Rest hand palm down, massage the arm

22. Concentrate of the tightness of the muscles

23. Move down back to the hand and fingers

24. Squeeze down along the sides of each finger

25. Finish with a firm final pressure, squeeze of

hand

26. Follow the same or similar routine on the

other arm/hand

Below are the foot massage techniques that a person can use on themselves or another person:

1. Warm up twists

Warm up twists are one way to start a foot massage.

To use this technique:
• place the palms on either side of the foot
• gently pull the right side of the foot forward while pushing the left side back
• push the left side of the foot back while pulling the right side forward
• repeat this twisting motion, working the hands from the ankle to the toes
The gentle twisting motion helps warm up the foot in preparation for further massage

6
2. Arch rubs

People can use arch rubs to massage the underside of the foot. To use this technique:
• hold the top of the foot in one hand
• with the fingers of the other hand, rub the length of the arch
• do this repeatedly, from the heel to the ball of the foot

3. Toe bends

Toe bends may encourage flexibility in the foot. To use this foot massage technique:
• hold the heel with one hand
• bend all the toes on one foot back and forth at the same time with the other hand
• repeat this movement, gently increasing pressure and flexing the toes to their full range of
motion

4. Foot spread

Food spreading may help the foot expand to its natural width. To use this foot massage technique:
• hold each side of the foot
• pull each side of the foot outward
• repeat this motion, allowing the foot to spread

5. Heel squeeze

Heel squeezes may help relieve tension at the back of the foot. To use this technique:
• hold the top of the foot in one hand

7
• hold the back of the heel in the other
• repeatedly squeeze and release the back of the heel

6. Knuckle or fist work

Knuckle or fist work is a way to massage the bottom of the foot. To use this technique:
• hold the back of the foot with one hand
• hold a knuckle or full fist on the other hand against the bottom of the foot
• use the knuckle or fist to knead the bottom of the foot, using moderate pressure
• repeat this motion, working down the ball of the foot to the heel

7. Thumb work

Thumb work is another foot massage technique that a person can practice on the bottom of the foot.
To use this technique:
• hold the foot with one hand on either side
• place the fingers on the top of the foot
• place the thumbs under each foot, on the toe pads
• use the thumbs to stroke down each toe, using moderate pressure
• move to the ball of the foot, repeating the downward stroke motion with the thumbs
• repeat this motion in the arch of the feet and the heel
• continue for as long as it is enjoyable

8. Pressure points

Pressing points on the instep is another relaxing foot massage technique. To use this technique:

8
• use one hand to support the top of the foot
• use the thumb of the other hand to press and release the top of the instep
• gradually move down the instep, repeating this pressing motion
• continue pressing and releasing, down to the back of the heel

9. Achilles massage

Achilles massage may help relieve pressure on the Achilles tendon. To use this foot massage
technique:
• grasp the Achilles tendon with the other hand, between the thumb and index finger
• use a stroking motion down toward the heel
• repeat this several times

10. Top and side circles

Top and side circling is a simple foot massage technique. To use it:
using both hands, support the foot from below
• extend the fingers and use them to make circles around the ankle on either side
• using a continuous circular movement, move the fingers around the side of the foot
• keep circling the fingers, continuing up to the toes
pay attention to the space between each tendon

11. Toe massage

Toe massage may help relieve tension and cramps in the toes. To use this foot massage
technique:
• hold the base of the foot with one hand
• with the fingers of the other hand, tug, twist, and pull each toe gently

9
• move from the outer to the inner toes
• repeat several times
• massage between each toe

12. Finishing strokes

People can use finishing strokes at the end of a foot massage. To use this technique:
Place the palms on either side of the foot gently pull the right side of the foot forward while pushing
the left side back then push the left side of the foot back while pushing the right side forward repeat this
twisting motion, working the hands from the ankle to the toes lighten the pressure each time, gradually
lifting the hands from the foot completely

Benefits of hand and foot massage:

1. Pain relief. It’s a scientifically proven fact that the carefully done massage is able to relieve the pain
in different parts of the body and to ease the strain in muscles. For example, when your feet muscles
are strained because of the high heels they become painful and a daily ten minutes massage will be
helpful in this situation.
2. Improves Blood circulation. The improving of blood circulation is the main aim of a hand and foot
massage. If our blood flow brings not enough oxygen to the nerves endings of our hands and feet they
can become sensitive and sometimes even numb.
3. Promotes better sleep. Try to massage your feet before going to bed. It will improve the blood
circulation and you will have a very restful sleep.
4. Helps in Relaxation. Relaxing points on hands and feet let our body relax and unwind from everyday
stress that harms human health.
5. Improves mood and fights depression. Reflexologists are sure that the depression can be fought
with the simple massage. Some points on our feet and hands are really helpful in improving our mood
and beating depression.
6. Make the hands and feet healthy. It’s absolutely not surprising that by massaging our feet and
hands we make them only healthier day by day. When we stimulate the muscles of ankles and wrists
with massaging, they become more flexible and stronger and it prevents them from different types of
injures.
7. Alleviates swelling (edema) Regular foot massage can help reduce the effects of edema, which is
swelling in the feet and ankles due to fluid retention. This is very common among pregnant women.

The following are the things to be done to ensure the safety and comfort of the clients during the
entire process of the services
1. Seat client on a chair
2. Ensure client's safety and comfort prior to the activity.
3. Wash and sanitize your hands.
4. Check the condition of the hands and feet
5. Remove any jewelry from the body part to be treated.

10
Safety Precautions When Using the Tools, Materials and Equipment
1. Take proper care of the tools, materials and equipment.
2. Dispose and replace any tools, materials and equipment that do not function anymore.
3. Always sterilize or sanitize the tools, materials and equipment every after use to ensure that there is
no bacteria or fungus growth.
4. Read the instructions carefully how tools, materials and equipment should be used to avoid injury

Manicure and pedicure are beauty treatments that trim, shape, and polish the nails. It also
includes hand and foot massage that makes the hand and foot relax. As soon the cleaning of fingernails
and toenails done, the next step is the application of nail designs according to the desire of the
customers. Nail designing means is the act of painting an image onto a fingernail or toenail, using a
nailbrush or nail polish pen. Nail polish, or nail varnish is a lacquer applied to
human fingernails or toenails to decorate and/or protect the nail. A well maintained, neat, trimmed nails
make a statement that you care about your health and appearance. Regular nail care ensures that your
nails stay strong and becomes more attractive with nail designs.
On this lesson it guides you on the step-by-step procedure of creating different designs from
the basic to the more complicated one. Having knowledge about the structures of nail as well as its
diseases are also very much important when it comes to nail designing. Always keep in mind too to
have safety precautions, sanitation procedures at all times to prevent accidents or injury and to protect
you and your client during the entire process.

geometric shapes. All you have to do is cut the tape into a thin strip or whatever shape you wish, paste
it onto the nail and paint over it.

Nail art brushes are the used for creating intricate designs. It also helps in creating different strokes
patterns. A set of nail art brushes contains five main types: fan-shaped brushes, flat brushes, flat
angled brushes, thin brushes (used for detail) and long stripers..
5. Nail polish
Nail polish is a lacquer that can be applied to the human fingernail or toenails to decorate and protect
