Applications of Isotopes

1. Isotopes are forms of the same element that differ in their number of neutrons. Stable isotopes do not undergo nuclear decay while unstable isotopes will eventually decay through radioactive decay. 2. Carbon dating uses carbon isotopes to determine the age of fossils by comparing the ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 to the ratio present at the time of death, though it is not completely reliable due to environmental factors. 3. Medical isotopes are used for sterilization, nuclear imaging for diagnosis, and radiation treatment of cancer cells. Particle accelerators and nuclear reactors produce medical isotopes.
