MANDATORY INSTRUCTIONS
2. Record should be updated from time to time and the previous experiment must be signed by
the faculty in charge concerned before attending the lab.
3. Students who turn up late to the labs will in no case be permitted to perform the experiment
scheduled for the day.
4. After completion of the experiment, certification of the staff in-charge concerned in the
observation book is necessary.
5. Students should bring a notebook of about 100 pages and should enter the
readings/observations/results into the notebook while performing the experiment.
6. The record of observations along with the detailed experimental procedure of the experiment
performed in the immediate previous session should be submitted and certified by the staff
member in-charge.
7. Not more than FIVE students in a group are permitted to perform the experiment on a set up.
8. The group-wise division made in the beginning should be adhered to, and no mix up of
student among different groups will be permitted later.
9. The components required pertaining to the experiment should be collected from Lab- in-
charge after duly filling in the requisition form.
10. When the experiment is completed, students should disconnect the setup made by them,
and should return all the components/instruments taken for the purpose.
11. Any damage of the equipment or burnout of components will be viewed seriously either by
putting penalty or by dismissing the total group of students from the lab for the
semester/year.
12. Students should be present in the labs for the total scheduled duration.
13. Students are expected to prepare thoroughly to perform the experiment before coming to
Laboratory.
14. Procedure sheets/data sheets provided to the students groups should be maintained neatly and
are to be returned after the experiment.

THEORY: A planar truss is one where all the members and nodes lie within a two dimensional
plane, while a space truss has members and nodes extending into three dimensions. The top
beams in a truss are called top chords and are typically in compression, the bottom beams are
called bottom chords and are typically in tension, the interior beams are called webs, and the
areas inside the webs are called panels
3D TRUSS PARTS
2D TRUSS
1. Select a new project then select SPACE and then ADD BEAM
2. Now go to geometry and select RUN STRUCRURE WIZARD and select the TRUSS
MODELS and then select the type of truss. Now give number of bays along length, height,
and also along width.
3. Now select option GENERAL and define property by giving the dimensions of respective
beam/column.

5. Now give the supports by selecting the type of supports required for the truss.

3. Define parameters
7. If there is any error occurred in the given data it shows the errors and warnings and then you
have to rectify it. Steel design occurs only when if there are no errors.
EXPERIMENT NO: 7
ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF 2-D BUILDING FRAME
AIM: To analyze and design a 2-D frame.
THEORY: Portal frames can be defined as two-dimensional rigid frames that have the basic
characteristics of a rigid joint between column and beam. The main objective of this form of
design is to reduce bending moment in the beam, which allows the frame to act as one structural
unit. Generally portal frames are used for single-story buildings but they can be used for low-rise
buildings with several floors where they can be economic if the floors do not span right across
the building.
1. Open the software and select the option PLANE for 2D and SPACE for 3D, as we are
doing a 2-D frame select PLANE then select ADD BEAM and set the dimensions in
meters and kilonewtons for ease.
OR
Enter the coordinates of frame manually in geometry.
OR
Draw a frame directly on the grid
3. Now select GENERAL in that select DEFINE PARAMETERS and define the
dimensions of the beam/column in meters and then assign it to the selected part.
7. Now give the load conditions like self weight, UDL or Point load and assign to the
selected beam/column.
1. Select the type of material used for the particular frame and assign to the whole structure.
7. If there is any error occurred in the given data it shows the errors and warnings and then
you have to rectify it. Concrete design occurs only when if there are no errors.

8. Give lateral loads and assign them
PROCEDURE FOR DESIGN:
