ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF 2-D STEEL TRUSS

SOFTWARE USED: STAAD PRO -STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

AIM: To analyze and design a steel tabular truss.

USED SOFTWARE: STAAD PRO

THEORY: A planar truss is one where all the members and nodes lie within a two dimensional
plane, while a space truss has members and nodes extending into three dimensions. The top
beams in a truss are called top chords and are typically in compression, the bottom beams are
called bottom chords and are typically in tension, the interior beams are called webs, and the
areas inside the webs are called panels

PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS:

1. Select a new project then select SPACE and then ADD BEAM

2. Now go to geometry and select RUN STRUCRURE WIZARD and select the TRUSS
MODELS and then select the type of truss. Now give number of bays along length, height,
and also along width.

Select the node and support ASSIGN TO SELECTED NODES ASSIGN

7. Now give the load conditions.

LOADSLOADCASEADDASSIGN TO SELECTED BEAM/COLUMNASSIGN

8. Now analyze the frame by selecting RUN ANALYSIS option.

PROCEDURE FOR DESIGN:

1. Select the type of material as steel.

2. Select the respective steel code IS800.

3. Define parameters

4. Now ADD COMMANDS, Check code, Member Takeoff, Takeoff.

5. Assign the selected to the whole frame.

6. ANALYZEADDRUNANALYSISVIEW OUTPUT FILE.

7. If there is any error occurred in the given data it shows the errors and warnings and then you
have to rectify it. Steel design occurs only when if there are no errors.

RESULT: Hence a steel truss is analyzed and designed.

ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF 2-D BUILDING FRAME
AIM: To analyze and design a 2-D frame.

USED SOFTWARE: STAAD PRO

THEORY: Portal frames can be defined as two-dimensional rigid frames that have the basic
characteristics of a rigid joint between column and beam. The main objective of this form of
design is to reduce bending moment in the beam, which allows the frame to act as one structural
unit. Generally portal frames are used for single-story buildings but they can be used for low-rise
buildings with several floors where they can be economic if the floors do not span right across
the building.

A 2-D frame is as shown in the following figure

PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS:

1. Open the software and select the option PLANE for 2D and SPACE for 3D, as we are
doing a 2-D frame select PLANE then select ADD BEAM and set the dimensions in
meters and kilonewtons for ease.

NEW PROJECT→PLANE→NEXT→ADD BEAM→FINISH

2. Now go to geometry then select STRUCTURE WIZARD in that select FRAME

MODELS and then select the type of frame you want and their give respective values like
number of bays along length, height only but not along width. And then transfer the
model to the window.

GEOMETRY→ RUN STRUCTURE WIZARD → FRAME MODELS → TRANSFER

OR
Enter the coordinates of frame manually in geometry.

OR
Draw a frame directly on the grid

3. Now select GENERAL in that select DEFINE PARAMETERS and define the
dimensions of the beam/column in meters and then assign it to the selected part.

GENERAL → DEFINE PARAMETERS → ASSIGN

4. Now give supports by selecting the type of support, and then assign to the selected node.

SUPPORTS →CREATE →ADD →CLOSE

5. Now assign the selected support to the respective node.

6. Now give the load details.
LOAD&DEFINATIONS →LOAD CASE DETAILS →ADD →LOAD
CASE

7. Now give the load conditions like self weight, UDL or Point load and assign to the
selected beam/column.

PROCEDURE FOR DESIGN:

1. Select the type of material used for the particular frame and assign to the whole structure.

2. Select the respective code (eg: for RCC – IS456).

3. Define parameters like f c.

4. Now add COMMANDS, Design Beam, Design Column and Takeoff.

5. Assign the selected to the whole frame.

6. ANALYZEADDRUNANALYSISVIEW OUTPUT FILE.

7. If there is any error occurred in the given data it shows the errors and warnings and then
you have to rectify it. Concrete design occurs only when if there are no errors.

RESULT:

Hence a 2-D frame is analyzed and designed.
