Lidocaine Drug Study

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug. It works by altering sodium ion flux across cell membranes, which suppresses automaticity and spontaneous depolarization of ventricles. It has several indications including use as an intravenous antiarrhythmic, intramuscular self-injection or when IV is unavailable, local infiltration or topical anesthetic, and as a patch for post-herpetic neuralgia pain. Nurses must monitor for adverse effects like drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, bradycardia, hypotension, and burning sensation. They must also monitor ECG, blood pressure, respiratory status and serum lidocaine levels during prolonged use.
