Distillation
Distillation, or classical distillation, is the process of separating the components or substances
from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation.
Dry distillation is the heating of solid materials to produce gaseous products (which may
condense into liquids or solids). Dry distillation may involve chemical changes such as
destructive distillation or cracking and is not discussed under this article. Distillation may result
in essentially complete separation (nearly pure components), or it may be a partial separation that
increases the concentration of selected components in the mixture. In either case, the process
exploits differences in the relative volatility of the mixture's components. In industrial
applications, distillation is a unit operation of practically universal importance, but it is a
physical separation process, not a chemical reaction. Distillation has many applications. The
distillation of fermented products produces distilled beverages with a high alcohol content or
separates other fermentation products of commercial value. Distillation is an effective and
traditional method of desalination. In the petroleum industry, oil stabilization is a form of partial
distillation that reduces the vapor pressure of crude oil, thereby making it safe for storage and
transport as well as reducing the atmospheric emissions of volatile hydrocarbons. In midstream
operations at oil refineries, fractional distillation is a major class of operation for transforming
crude oil into fuels and chemical feed stocks. Cryogenic distillation leads to the separation of air

into its components – notably oxygen, nitrogen, and argon – for industrial use. In the chemical
industry, large amounts of crude liquid products of chemical synthesis are distilled to separate
them, either from other products, from impurities, or from unreacted starting materials.
Please answer these following questions based on the passage above
1. What is the main purpose of distillation?
Answer : To Distillation, or classical distillation, is the process of separating the
components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and
condensation.

2. Which distillation process uses heating to produce gaseous products?

Answer : Dry ditillation

3. Why distillation process has prominent importance in industry?

Answer : Important, because any industries use distillation process. In the petroleum
industry, oil stabilization is a form of partial distillation that reduces the vapor pressure of
crude oil, thereby making it safe for storage and transport as well as reducing the
atmospheric emissions of volatile hydrocarbons.

4. What are the differences between Cryogenic and dry distillation?

Answer : Cryogenic distillation leads to the separation of air into its components –
notably oxryogenic distillation leads to the separation of air into its components – notably
oxygen, nitrogen, and argon – for industrial use. While, dry distillation is the heating of
solid materials to produce gaseous products (which may condense into liquids or solids).
Dry ditillation may involve chemical changes such as destructive distillation or cracking.

5. How is distillation process used in the petroleum industry?

Answer : In the petroleum industry, oil stabilization is a form of partial distillation that
reduces the vapor pressure of crude oil, thereby making it safe for storage and transport
as well as reducing the athmospheric emissions of volatile hydrocarbons.

Writing Section part 1

Examine the graph carefully and describe it using a paragraph

Details :
The graph displays Participants in the Learning Emancipation Program at the UNNES Faculty of
Engineering. Overall data for the UNNES Faculty of Engineering Research Program participants
tended to vary between participants. The number of training participants is 400 people. However,
the number of student exchanges is 550 people, which is the maximum number of participants in
the UNNES Faculty of Engineering open study program. Compared to the 200 exchange
students, the number of instructors teaching is few. However, there are 150 in Rural Spatial
Development.

The Future of The Renewable Fuel Dependable

BOE in 2000 to 1.511 million BOE in 2013. This phenomenon occurs because every activity that

(gasoline, diesel oil, IDO, kerosene, fuel oil, avtur and avgas). During this period, the total oil
fuel consumption increased from 315 million BOE in 2000 to 399 million BOE in 2013,

increased of an average of 1.83% per year. In 2000, the consumption of diesel oil has the largest
share (38.7%) followed by kerosene (23.4%), gasoline (23.0%), fuel oil (9.6%), IDO (3%) and
avtur (2.2%). Subsequently in 2013 the order is shifted into diesel oil (45.4%), gasoline (44.5%),
avtur (6.1%), kerosene (1.9%), and fuel oil (1.9%).
Paragraph Agree
Main Idea
Recent scientific findings have shown that the use of renewable fuel can replace
fossil – based fuel.
Supporting Idea
Biofuel which is developed from biomass is able to replace the use of gas in some
advanced countries.
Supporting Example
Germany has started to use bioethanol as renewable fuel instead of gas in its public
transportation since 5 years ago.

Paragraph Disagree
Main Idea
There is a global food crisis caused by the planting of raw materials from biofuels.
Supporting Idea
a) Reduced food production causes food prices to rise
b) Biofuel production results in reduced land for food production in several countries
Supporting Example
a) The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) noted that the average global
vegetable oil price index rose 34.3% in June 2022 compared to June 2021 (year-
on-year/yoy). The food commodity that recorded the next largest increase was the
cereal or grain group, where the global price index rose 27.6% (yoy) in June
2022. Then the global price index for the dairy or milk group and its processed
products rose 24.9% (yoy) ), the meat price index rose 12.7% (yoy), and the sugar
price index rose 8.9% (yoy) in June 2022. In general, the world food price index
has increased 23.1% (yoy) in June 2022.
b) In a report on one of the study results from the Insecure Society as reported by the
BBC, Sunday (13/5/2007) which came out a few days after the United Nations
(UN) issued a report on biofuels, that in producing biofuels it takes about 9
percent of world plantation land only to replace 10 percent of the fuel, meaning
that biofuel production causes less land for food production.

Conclusion
Renewable energy is urgently needed to replace the scarce fuels. However, the use of
renewable energy also creates new problems as important as decreasing fuel availability.
Stakeholders therefore need to consider what should be done in the future and what the
implications will be so that the international community is not threatened.
