MM626 2

This document contains 4 problems related to yield criteria for metals. Problem 1 asks about determining the tensile force required to cause yielding in a metal cube according to Tresca and von Mises criteria. Problem 2 asks about calculating tensile yield strength based on given stresses and the two criteria. Problem 3 asks about determining the minimum thickness of a thin-walled tube to avoid yielding under internal pressure according to the two criteria. Problem 4 asks about deriving relations between stress and strain paths for different conditions according to von Mises criterion.

MM 626 Problem-Set 2

1. The area of each face of a metal cube is 14 cm2 and this metal has a yield stress in pure
shear, k, equal to 140 MPa. If tensile force of 45 kN and 90 kN are applied in two directions (say
x and y), what is the magnitude of the tensile force that must be applied in the third (z) direction
to cause yielding according to (a) Tresca criterion and (b) von Mises criterion?

2. If an alloy yields under the following applied stress (plane stress) σx = 450 N/mm2, σy =
250 N/mm2 and σz = 150 N/mm2, calculate the tensile yield strength assuming (a) Tresca criterion
and (b) von Mises criterion.

3. A thin walled tube with closed ends is to be subjected to a maximum internal pressure, p,
of 34.5 MPa in service. The mean radius, r, of the tube is 30.5 cm and it is not to yield in any
region. (a) If the material has a tensile yield strength of 690 MPa, what should be the minimum
thickness, t, of the tube to avoid yielding according the Tresca criterion? (b) If the shear yield
strength is equal to 276 MPa repeat part (a). (Note: For thin walled tube, three principal stresses
are σ1 (hoop) = pr/t, σ2 (axial) = pr/2t and σ3 (radial) = 0.

4. Derive the relations between stress and strain paths assuming von Mises criterion for the
following cases: (a) Plane stress, (b) Tensile stress, (c) Balanced biaxial stress and (d) Plane strain
conditions.
