Oet Seminar 1

The document summarizes a seminar presentation about ozone layer depletion. It describes the ozone layer and its role in absorbing UV radiation. It then discusses the main causes of ozone layer depletion as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released into the atmosphere from products like aerosol sprays. CFCs contain chlorine that destroys ozone molecules. The effects of ozone layer depletion are increased UV radiation at Earth's surface, which can damage human health through higher risks of skin cancer and eye cataracts. Preventive measures mentioned include public awareness campaigns and avoiding products that use ozone-depleting substances.

Content
• Introduction-What is Ozone layer?
• Ozone layer depletion
• Causes of Ozone layer depletion
• Preventive measures
• Conclusion
• Reference
Introduction
• The ozone layer sits in the stratosphere between 15 km and 30 km above
the earth
• Shields us and other living things from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet
radiation.
• The ozone layer is able to absorb maximum of 98% of the sun’s UV light
• International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer – 16th
September
Causes of Ozone layer depletion
• Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been identified as the main cause of the destruction to the
ozone layer

• When chlorine or bromine atoms come into contact with ozone in the stratosphere, they
destroy ozone molecules

• One chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules before it is removed from the
stratosphere

• Ozone can be destroyed more quickly than it is naturally created.

• Some of the most dangerous gases are CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), halogenated

hydrocarbon, methyl bromide and nitrous oxide.
Effects of Ozone layer depletion
• Ozone layer depletion causes increased UV radiation levels at the Earth’s
surface, which is damaging to human health
• Negative effects include increases in certain types of skin cancers, eye
cataracts and immune deficiency disorders.
• Phytoplankton dies in the presence of ultraviolet rays which results in a
decrease in fish productivity
• As the ozone layer depletes, plant growth, development and the time of
flowering shifts for a few plant species.
Preventive measures
• Spreading public awareness about the causes, impacts, and controlling
measures of ozone layer depletion.

• Avoid the consumption of ODS which are dangerous to the ozone layer

• Refrigerators and air conditioners that do not use CFCs as a refrigerant can
be used.

• Avoid using Harmful pesticides
