MODULE 5 TYPES OF CURRENT
In this lesson you will be exploring the different types, and uses of an electric current.
Now, you know that electric current is always present in a circuit that is found in
every electrical appliances or any electrical consuming device.
Electrical circuits has been always part of the life of an electrician, technician and even
engineers. Wiring diagrams, wiring plan, electrical plan are always involve an electrical circuits.
In order to make it safe and free from risk, it should be properly installed and accurately
supplied the correct and exact type of current and the factors needed in a circuit, in order to
make us safe and secure, because electric current is quite dangerous.
In this lesson, as you work on with the activity, you will be able to answer the following
key questions:
Before you start with the Lesson, be sure to answer the pre – assessment.

Lesson
Direct Current
1 ( DC )
What’s In?
Direct Current ( DC ) is a type of electric current source which the flow of electric
charges is always of the same direction. Unlike alternating current, the direction and amperage
does not change. It is used in many household electronics and in all devices that use batteries.
An electrochemical cell is a prime source of DC power. It may flow through a conductor like
3
wire, but can also flow through semiconductors, insulators or even through a vacuum as in
electron or ion beams.

Generalization:
1. How did you feel when you assemble the Direct Current circuit ?
2. How important is the Direct Current circuit compared to other circuit ?
3. How long did you finish assembling the circuit ?
5
What is It?
DIRECT CURRENT
Direct Current is a type of electric current that has a negative and positive terminal which
cannot be interchanged due to its polarity.
Parts of a DC circuit
1. Souce - this refers to a device that supplied a voltage, like single dry cell, battery ,
dynamo and etc.
2. Load - this refers to any consuming device, like bulb/lamp, radio, cellphone, T.V.,
DVD player and etc.
3. Path - this refers to the wire or conductor in which the current can pass through.
4. Control - this refers to the switch use in a circuit.
6
Figure below shows a circuit diagram using a Direct Current ( Battery ) as a source.

95 ohms has 9 volts
Positive terminal
resistance Negative terminal
PROBLEM :
I = E ÷ R
= 6 ÷ 95
I = 0.063 Amperes

85 ohms
7
1. How much is the power rating of the pilot bulb in the circuit ?
P = I X E
= 0.115 X 9.775
P = 1.124 watts
Directions : Read the questions carefully. Write only the letter of the correct answer in a
separate sheet of paper .
A. Battery C. Load
B. Generator D. Transformer
A. Battery C. Generator
4. How many volts has a battery cell if it has three single dry cells ?
A. Battery C. Generator

15. What can you say about the voltage of bulb 1 and 2 ?
9
What’s More
Identify which of the following devices has Direct Current Circuit or has No Direct Current
Circuit . Write DC for Direct Current Circuit and NDC for No Direct Current Circuit in a sheet of
paper
Lesson
Alternating
2 Current ( AC )
In the previous lesson, you have learned about Direct Current ( DC ). Now, you will learn
another type of current source, the Alternating Current ( AC ).
Now in this lesson you will know exactly what is an Alternating Current and its
usefulness. The type of current that is most dangerous.
10
What’s In
Alternating Current ( AC ) is another type of current source in which the electric current
periodically reverses its direction and changes its magnitude continuously with time in contrast
to Direct Current ( DC ) which flows only in one direction. The current charges cannot be
determined as to negative and positive charges because they are flowing alternately which
means the polarity cannot be determined, So, there is an absence of polarity of current. What is
specified in the terminal is determined as Line 1 ( L1 ) and Line 2 ( L2 ). Most of our Electric
supplier are using Alternating Current like VECO for Cebu City, CEBECO for Cebu Province
and MECO for Lapulapu City and in some other areas of our country, Why? This is because
Alternating Current can supply a bigger amount of voltage and current and it can be converted
into higher or lower voltage and current.

2. Does the voltage source of Alternating Current has a negative and positive
terminal ?
What Is It?
ALTERNATING CURRENT
12
Alternating Current travels in alternate direction / path as compared to Direct Current that
travels in a direct path. If the current can not travels in a straight direction it could be distorted
making the current low so the voltage supply will become low also that is why there are “ Low
Voltage “ in some other areas.
1. Souce - this refers to a device that supplied a voltage, like generator, alternator, but
most of all the current supplied by our different electric companies and cooperatives,
under the supervision of the National Electric Administration ( NEA ).
2. Load - this refers to any consuming device, like bulb/lamp, radio, cellphone, T.V.,
washing machine, electric fan, DVD player and etc.
3. Path - this refers to the wire or conductor in which the current can pass through.
4. Control - this refers to the switch use in a circuit.

Using the symbol - I = E ÷ R
50 watts bulb
220 volts
AC source
Solution :
I = P ÷ E
= 50 ÷ 220
I = 0.227 Amp. ( so this time solve now the resistance of the circuit )
R = E ÷ I
= 220 ÷ 0.227
R = 969.162 ohms

50 watts and 100 watts respectively supplied by 220 volts?
A. Battery C. Generator
