MODULE 5 TYPES OF CURRENT

In this lesson you will be exploring the different types, and uses of an electric current.

An electric current is a stream of charged particles, such as electrons or ions, moving

through an electrical conductor or space. It is measured as the net rate of flow of electric charge
past a region. It will pass also through its path which we call as the wire or conductor. The
path may be closed ( joined at both ends ) making it a loop. A closed circuit makes an electrical
current to flow possible. It makes also the current to stop to flow due to the path of the circuit
has been cut or break or simply mean as open circuit.

Now, you know that electric current is always present in a circuit that is found in
every electrical appliances or any electrical consuming device.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. Differentiate alternating from direct current, and

2. Identify the different appliances that consumes alternating and direct current.

What I Need To Know ?

Electrical circuits has been always part of the life of an electrician, technician and even
engineers. Wiring diagrams, wiring plan, electrical plan are always involve an electrical circuits.
In order to make it safe and free from risk, it should be properly installed and accurately
supplied the correct and exact type of current and the factors needed in a circuit, in order to
make us safe and secure, because electric current is quite dangerous.

In this lesson, as you work on with the activity, you will be able to answer the following
key questions:

What is Direct Current ( DC ) ?

What are the parts of a Direct Current circuit?
When to use a Direct Current source?
How to identify a Direct Current circuit?
How to solve problems pertaining to Direct Current circuit ?

Before you start with the Lesson, be sure to answer the pre – assessment.

Direct Current
1 ( DC )

What’s In?

Direct Current ( DC ) is a type of electric current source which the flow of electric
charges is always of the same direction. Unlike alternating current, the direction and amperage
does not change. It is used in many household electronics and in all devices that use batteries.
An electrochemical cell is a prime source of DC power. It may flow through a conductor like

3
wire, but can also flow through semiconductors, insulators or even through a vacuum as in
electron or ion beams.

Lesson
Alternating
2 Current ( AC )

What I Need To Know

In the previous lesson, you have learned about Direct Current ( DC ). Now, you will learn
another type of current source, the Alternating Current ( AC ).

Now in this lesson you will know exactly what is an Alternating Current and its
usefulness. The type of current that is most dangerous.

10
What’s In

Alternating Current ( AC ) is another type of current source in which the electric current
periodically reverses its direction and changes its magnitude continuously with time in contrast
to Direct Current ( DC ) which flows only in one direction. The current charges cannot be
determined as to negative and positive charges because they are flowing alternately which
means the polarity cannot be determined, So, there is an absence of polarity of current. What is
specified in the terminal is determined as Line 1 ( L1 ) and Line 2 ( L2 ). Most of our Electric
supplier are using Alternating Current like VECO for Cebu City, CEBECO for Cebu Province
and MECO for Lapulapu City and in some other areas of our country, Why? This is because
Alternating Current can supply a bigger amount of voltage and current and it can be converted
into higher or lower voltage and current.

What’s New?

150 watts bulb

Alternating
Current Source
220 volts from

1. How much is the current of the bulb ?

Procedure in solving an AC circuit problem :

1. Determine the given factors.

2. Determine the formula to be used.
3. Substitute the formula from the given value.
4. Do the operation whether it is a multiplication or division.

Observations / Guide Questions

1. What type of current source is used to energize the bulb?

2. Is the supplied voltage higher or lower than the DC cicuit ?

3. Does the bulb has a resistance? How much ?

Generalization :

1. What is the difference between Alternating Current from a Direct Current in a

circuit?

2. Does the voltage source of Alternating Current has a negative and positive
terminal ?

What Is It?

ALTERNATING CURRENT

12
Alternating Current travels in alternate direction / path as compared to Direct Current that
travels in a direct path. If the current can not travels in a straight direction it could be distorted
making the current low so the voltage supply will become low also that is why there are “ Low
Voltage “ in some other areas.

Figure shows that Alternating Current travels in alternate direction / path.

Nowadays, Alternating Current ( AC ) makes the transmission of electrical power to

great distance much more economical. Supposed we need to transmit power, W ( watts ), one
more likely megawatts: millions of watts from the power station where it is produced by steam
turbines or water turbines to distant users. But what makes the difference of these two, once
the current is established, it has also a constant. Direct Current ( DC ) is the flow of electric
charge in only one direction. It is the steady state of a constant – voltage circuit. Alternating
Current ( AC ) is the flow of electric charge that periodically reverses its direction. Why is
Alternating Current is used today even before, especially in our home? It is easier to distribute
over large distances with relatively low losses and it is a bit safer eventhough it is most
dangerous for the same voltage if touched but it is easier to transform from one voltage to
another.

Parts of Alternating Current Circuit :

1. Souce - this refers to a device that supplied a voltage, like generator, alternator, but
most of all the current supplied by our different electric companies and cooperatives,
under the supervision of the National Electric Administration ( NEA ).
2. Load - this refers to any consuming device, like bulb/lamp, radio, cellphone, T.V.,
washing machine, electric fan, DVD player and etc.
3. Path - this refers to the wire or conductor in which the current can pass through.
4. Control - this refers to the switch use in a circuit.

2. Formula in Solving Current - Current = Voltage ÷ Resistance ( unit is amperes )

Solving the resistance of a bulb in an AC circuit. ( refer the figure below )

Solution :

1. R = E ÷ I ( since the current is unknown, solve it first )

I = P ÷ E

= 50 ÷ 220

I = 0.227 Amp. ( so this time solve now the resistance of the circuit )

R = E ÷ I

= 220 ÷ 0.227

R = 969.162 ohms
