9.3 Part 2 Lesson

The document defines percentage yield as the actual yield of a reaction divided by the theoretical yield multiplied by 100. It provides examples to explain the concepts of actual yield, theoretical yield, and reasons the actual yield may be lower than theoretical including side reactions, reactions not going to completion, and impurities in reactants. It then gives examples of calculating percentage yield when given the actual and theoretical yields, and calculating actual yield when given the percentage yield and theoretical yield.

3 percentage yield(product)

%Yied = (actual tield/theoretical tield)x100

- Actual yield:- the real yield produced by a reaction

- Theoretical yield:- (expected or calculated yield or prof) calculated by mass-mass calculations
Just like irony, we expect to find that we make an x amount of profit but get and actual profit of
x, and the actual yield could never be more that the theoretical yield because:
1- side reactions
2- reaction not going to completion
3- impurities in the reactants (chemicals are not pure.)

examples of each number:

1- you buy h and n to make Nh3 and you bring that to make a reaction (side reactions) you see
another compound forms too, that is a side reaction that is not expected. lost.

2-You buy H box, and find about 7gs of h2o. H2o is impurity and it cannot be changed.

3-You mix the chemicals 80% react 20% cannot.

Question format: in a reaction the actual yield is 8g while the expected yield is 24 g calculate the
%yield .

%yield =(A.Y./Th. Y.)x100 8/24x100 =33.33%

Example 2: if the percentage yield of a reaction is 30% and the theortitical yield is 50g. calculate
the actual yield.

30/100 =A.Y/50 cross multiply Ayx100=30x50 A.y =15g.
