GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER

UNIT 1

Answer the following questions.

a. What do you mean by the term 'Generation'?
Generation means any remarkable changes in any product. Or Generation in
computer terminology is a change in technology a computer is being used.

b. How many generations of computer are there? Write the time period of each.
There are Five generations of Computer.
a. First generation of computer – 1964-1958
b. Second generation of computer – 1959-1964
c. Third generation of computer – 1965-1970
d. Fourth generation of computer – 1971-1981
e. Fifth generation of computer – 1982 - Present

c. What is a microprocessor?
A microprocessor is an electronic component that is used by a computer to do its
work. It is a central processing unit on a single integrated circuit chip containing
millions of very small components.
d. Differentiate between 1st generation and 2nd generation computers.
First Generation:

1. Vacuum tubes were used as internal components.

2. The sizes of computer were very huge called mainframes.

3. They were low speed computer

4. Main memory was in the form of magnetic drum.

5. Punched card and magnetic tape was used.

6. Very expensive

7. ENIAC and UNIVAC are examples

Second Generation:

1. Transistors were used as internal component.

2. The sizes of computer were smaller than first generation & were called as
minicomputer.
3. They were 10 times faster than first generation computer.
4. Main memory was in the form RAM and ROM.
5. Magnetic tape was used.
6. Cost was less than 1st generation
7. IBM 140, Mark III are examples

e. What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to
think and learn. It is also a field of study which tries to make computers "smart".

f. What are the features of Fourth generation computers?

1. The fourth generation computers have microprocessor-based systems. It uses
VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated) circuits.
2. They are the cheapest among all the computer generation.
3. The speed, accuracy and reliability of the computers were improved in fourth
generation computers.
4. Many high-level languages were developed in the fourth generation such as C,
C++, Java.
5. A Further refinement of input/output devices was developed.
6. Networking between the systems was developed in fourth generation computer.

g. How can we say that 4th generation computer is better than 3rd generation
computer?
4th generation computers became small and more powerful, they could be linked
together to form networks, which eventually led to the development of the Internet.
Fourth generation computers also saw the development of GUIs, the mouse and
handheld devices. Fourth generation consumed less electricity than third generation.

h. What is integrated circuit?

An integrated circuit is a set of electronic circuits on one small flat piece of
semiconductor material that is normally silicon. Which made the computer more
powerful and increase the speed and efficiency of computer.

i. What is the main goal of 5th generation computer?

Fifth generation computers are in developmental stage which is based on the
artificial intelligence. The goal of the fifth generation is to develop the device which
could respond to natural language input and are capable of learning and self-
organization.
