Pioneer 2022:ELEVATE
Written by: Leeyuen H. Aquino

The Pioneer 2022: ELEVATE

themed “Reinventing Business Norms and
Trends To Your Advantage” is a 2-day
webinar held on the 27th and 28th of
August, 2022. This event is a collaboration
between Wesleyan
University-Philippines College of Business
and Accountancy (WU-P CBA) and
University of the Philippines – Business
Management Society. The CBA Local
Council endorse and commend the WUP- Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants to take part of the
webinar series. WUP- JPIA assigned their board members as their representative for the said event.
Yours truly, Leeyuen Aquino- Associate for Public Relations, together with Jazlyn Odra- Assistant
Secretary, Emerald Leanne De Torres- Associate for Non- Academics, John Gabrielle Odonio-
Associate for Graphics and Publication, Shin Hwang Elisha Remigio- Associate for Finance, and
Richard Garabillo- Associate for Academics. We also have the participation of some of our executives
in Sophia Nicole Dela Cruz- Local Chapter President, Jonard Jay Miranda- Vice President for
Communications and Regine Ann Badiola- Vice President for Graphics and Publication. This gave
everyone the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, and techniques that we may utilize while still in
college and in the future job. Introductions and house rules were covered at the beginning of the
program by Marielle and Hanna, the event hosts. They also discussed Pioneer, an occasion that seeks
to empower young entrepreneurs by enabling them to make the most of their abilities and capabilities
and by assisting them in gaining a broader perspective of the business world still to be discovered. It
gives the attendees a chance to learn from and be
inspired by eminent speakers who are experts in
their disciplines in the business world.
Additionally, it gives us, students, a chance to
demonstrate our untapped abilities in coming up
with business concepts and pitching them to
potential investors in a tournament modeled after a
real company pitch.
The official ceremony program began with an
invocation by Danica Mei Maloles and
performances of the Philippine National Anthem
and UP Naming Mahal by the UP Pampanga Chorale. Following that, UPBMS Chief Executive Officer
Maria Lourdes Guanlao made her introductory remarks. Then, as an expression of gratitude, a video of
the sponsors was shown. Afterwards, there was a performance by UP Musicians' Guild, a group
comprised of music enthusiasts and skilled individuals, who boosted everyone's enthusiasm while
they sang "Every Summertime." The most anticipated first speaker was then revealed; his name is Mr.
Anton Cruz, and he handles marketing tasks, works as a brand partner at soul academy, and his
qualities ensure his success, thus he did a great job in his "Connect and Collaborate" talk, which
was followed by an open forum. He spoke on the beauty of brand collaborations and the importance of
creating a buzz in order to prevent monotony, ultimately attracting public attention and reaching
potential customers through cross promotions. His usage of the metaphor "1+2=3" was my favorite
part of his presentation, as there is always an added benefit when two parties collaborate. Mr. Anton
responded graciously to the queries posed by the attendees. Moreover, Danica and Yani handed him a
Certificate of Appreciation.
After the first icebreaker, which was called "Guess
the Brand," the second speaker Mr. Carlos Naguit
gave us his invaluable knowledge about "The Do's
of Digital Marketing." In his address, he presented
seven key ideas. First and foremost, marketing is
about getting people to say "yes." Second, it is not
essential to have the "superior" Product.

Thirdly,

marketing is knowing and always considering the present.

Fourth, organizations place an excessive emphasis on client
acquisition. Fifth, the gifted item is more powerful than the
given pen. Sixth, the best marketing lessons have nothing
to do with marketing. Finally, The initial step? Simply do it.
After his statement, there was an open forum followed by
the presentation of an appreciation certificate. After that,
there was a sponsor presentation to thank them for their support of the event, followed by a fact or
fiction icebreaker. In addition, participants were reminded to fill out the attendance sheet. Before the
first day concludes, Abby Christen of BMS sang Alapaap with her angelic voice. As preparation for day
2, an introduction to Mind the Product (MTP) with
the theme Mobility Through Innovative and Sustainable Transport Systems is provided as well as the
mechanics. The presentation concluded with a meaningful thank you to the Sponsors and a photo
opportunity for the participants.

Similar to the first day, the second day began with an

invocation by Danica Mei Maloles, followed by the
Philippine National Anthem and UP Naming Mahal
performed by the UP Pampanga Chorale. However, we
now have Frankie and Jeff as hosts, and they're the ones
who reminded everyone of the house rules. Then, the
Program Manager, Ms.
Anyssa Dominique Marquez, delivered her opening remarks. The Titos, as the third act, enchant
everyone with their harmonies before the introduction of the third speaker.

The third speaker is Mr. Rhens Rio Emil Guevarra, whose topic is "Improving and Managing
Productivity in a Hybrid Work Environment." What struck me was the reality that the future is hybrid,
which promotes employee productivity and eliminates the fear that others will judge you because they
will not. It was then followed by an open forum and certificate presentation.

Again, there is an icebreaker with the title Guess the

music. The most anticipated portion of the
competition began with the presentation of the Mind
the Product judging criteria and panel of judges,
composed of Tito Antonio Oflilada Jr., May Guanlao,
and Denver Vincent Mallari. The first group, The
Asset Builders, initiated the business pitch simulator
competition with their application Expressroad, a

one-stop app for all Filipino commuters. The second

group, Alpha Entreprenewrs, with their Book n Go
application, with tagline: easy book, easy go and
turning customer's travel experience from hate to
great. Last but not least, Team Alcazar's "GoTric"
application maximizes the utilization of tricycles by
providing a 3-in-1 service. Before the winner is
announced, there is an icebreaker: 2 pics 1 word. All the
participants did a good job in presenting their intention to improve the country’s transport system. All
of them were students of WU-P CBA under Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and Bachelor of Science
in Business Administration – Marketing Management program. Team
Alpha EntrepreNEWrs, made up of Laarni S. Bernardo, Gabriel B. Castro, and Fadi B. Murad, won
second runner up. While The Asset Builders, made up of Jana Angelica B. Bautista, Daniella Marie C.
Fajardo, and Kim Clarisse B. Zabat, won first runner up. Lastly, Team Alcazar, made up of Ella May B.
Antonio, Krisha Loraine D. Gapac, and Francheska V. Reyes was hailed as champion. They were
presented with their certificates and awards. While, the judges were also awarded certificates, as well
as the participating schools.
Since everything must eventually come to an end,
the program was brought to an end by Ms. Ruth
Carla Perello, chairperson of the Pioneer 2022:
Elevate committee, who delivered some moving
closing remarks. Following the completion of the
last showing of the video presentation detailing the
sponsors as well as the photo opportunity, everyone
then moved on to the next step of exiting the zoom
meeting and the facebook live broadcast. The event
may be over, but the lesson that was instilled in each
and every one of us will continue to be useful.

15th National Accounting Quiz Showdown
(NAQDown)
Written by: Leeyuen H. Aquino

Last November 12, 2022, Saturday,

commencing at 1 PM, I was honored to
witness and participate in the 15th
National Accounting Quiz Showdown
(NAQDown), entitled “Tales of Mimir:
The Epitome of Intellect and
Percipience”. In this event, I was
joined by my co-students from
Wesleyan- University Philippines. All
from the course of Bachelor of Science
in Accountancy or BSA, there were the
3rd year students: Ma. Ana Theresa R.
Gumisad and Lyka Aubrey C. Dela Cruz; and 4th year students: Ayrha C. Amboy, Jaycerine DC.
Guansing, Pamela Grace C. Matias, Teodoro M. Mendoza Jr., and Rose Anne A. Montenegro – all of
which are worth mentioning for their active participation and the great skills that they have
showcased in the showdown. This event was headed by Ms. Christine Joy T. Balobalo, National Vice
President for Academics and co-headed by Ms. Ianna Kate Catstor, National Chief associate for
Academic Events – who both deserves recognition as well for their hard work in making the event
come to life and materialize.
Before the quiz proper, the event was introduced by the organizers and hosts. The theme of
integrating Mimir, the god who values knowledge and wisdom, was also glossed over to emphasize
the importance of the event and to be
the set example for the purpose of the
event. The introduction included an
opening prayer and the singing of the
national anthem, followed by opening
remarks, as well as the objectives for
why this event was made. The hosts
and participants were introduced
thereafter, as well as the arbiters
which are Mr. Vhinson Jay Garcia, CPA
and Mr. Robert Carl Arrojo, CPA. The
Implementing Rules and Regulations
of the 15th National Accounting Quiz (NAQDown) for the quiz were also discussed, as well as the
pointing system. The quiz we partook in was divided to three parts based on the difficulty of the
questions namely: Easy, Average, and Difficult. But the event went as far as having a clincher round
to finalize the rankings. This was also not done at once as only the Elimination Round had been
concluded and there has yet to be Semi-Finals, and a Final Round. Topics included or covered on the
quiz that we had to study for were Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), Management
Advisory Services (MAS), Taxation, Advanced Financial Accounting and Reporting (AFAR),
Auditing, and Regulatory Framework for Business Transactions (RFBT).
After the said elimination round, this is followed
by the discussion of the answers where all of us
participants and attendees of the Zoom meeting
were encouraged to send in our answers and
thoughts on the questions and answers
themselves for a more interactive atmosphere.
This enabled the event to be a learning avenue
for all of us, including the spectators on the
topics covered of the quiz. Each question was
flashed on screen, read, and had the audience
ask their concerns about the questions first
before the actual answers are revealed, followed
by an explanation as to why those were the
appropriate answers.
After this segment, an awarding ceremony was done. Certificates of Appreciation were
distributed and awarded to the arbiters who had given the time to be present in the said event and
had shared their own wisdom to the students – both contestants and spectators. Words of gratitude
are exchanged before the evaluation
links are disseminated for crucial
feedback needed by the event so to
have improvement for the next one.
Finally, a photo opportunity was also
done so to commemorate the
happening of this event and to give
recognition to those of us who have
participated and attended (Photo

Junior Philippine Institute of
Accountants).

there were a lot of detours along the way but surely, one will always find his way on where he truly

unfortunately, she was not able to attend the

nonacademics and academics departments were discussed by Dilah Mariz M. Martin and Alnia R.
Bautista, the Regional Vice President for Non-Academics and the Regional Vice President for
Academics, respectively.

One of the most-awaited part of the program had eventually come, which was the presentation of
the 26th Regional Mid-Year Convention (RMYC) by the Regional Council President. This event was
one of the highlights of the federation year of JPIA. Together with other executive officers, they
revealed some of the details pertaining to the
date and place of the event, registration fee, as
well as the inclusions of the said fee. Along with
this, the non-academics and academics
department discussed the non-academic and
academic events that will be conducted in the
said upcoming event. This will be held as a
face-to-face event after two consecutive years of
conducting it online due to the pandemic.

The program had ended successfully around 6:00 PM and closed it by singing the paragons. Before
proceeding with the closed-door meeting, there was a photo opportunity with everyone in the who
attended the event for commemoration of the 2nd Regional Executive Board Meeting. The
closed-door meeting immediately followed the closing program where all the Local Chapter
Presidents were gathered for a separate meeting the Regional Council President. With this, there
was a question and answer with the presidents about the details in the upcoming event, the 26th
RMYC. These were all answered and discussed by Mr. Jomari G. Vasallo. The event concluded after
the closed-door meeting and all local chapters who have attended the event surely gathered tons of
knowledge and information that expand their experience especially being a part of the executive
officers in the happiest region, Region 3.

CBA ANNUAL GIFT-GIVING PROJECT 2022
By: Diana Mae Q. Sayson

It has been a tradition that we share the

virtue of generosity every Christmas
season through the Annual Gift Giving of
the department.

As the College of Business and

Accountancy continue to envision a
brighter Christmas for their adopted
communities, the CBA Local Council in
collaboration with the minor
organizations of JPIA, JPAMA, JMA, and
JFINEX resumed this celebration of
sharing the love and blessings.

On December 9, 2022, the WU-P JPIA Fordiencia Federation brought happiness and gifts for their
brethren in the Brgy. Bakod Bayan, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. It may be remembered that from
the past federation, they also visited this place to give gifts to the residences.

The event for Brgy. Bakod Bayan was spearheaded by

the Secretary-General, Jan Allyssa B. San Pedro, and the
Vice President for Academics, Justine Virola. They were
also accompanied by few officers from the JPIA Council
namely: Sophia Nicole C. dela Cruz, Local Chapter
President; Christopher M. Parial, Executive Vice
President; Ayrha C. Amboy, Vice President for Audit;
Diana Mae Q. Sayson, Vice President for
Non-Academics; Vince Hawlence Santiago, Vice
President for Membership; Richard Garabillo, Associate
for Academics; John Gabrielle P. Odonio, Associate for Graphs and Publications.

The program started with a story telling with the kids of

why people celebrate Christmas every year. They have
interacted with the kids through games such as “Group
Yourselves”, “Dance Showdown”, “Bring Me”, and
“Mini quiz bee.” The children were delighted with the
prizes they received such as biscuits, candies, and toys
which all came from the monetary and in-kind
donations.

The event ended with the giving of grocery packages for the children and clothes that came from the
joint donations of the BSA students and other CBA students. The grocery packages included canned
goods, instant noodles, spaghetti set, coffee, and milk.
Through the hearts that beat for helping, the
brains that planned this event, and the hands that
offered goodness, more than 70 families were
reached by the donations. Indeed, the
organization has traveled extra miles to draw
smiles.
Summing up the whole theme of the event, just as
how San Pedro constructed it, “more than the
bounty food we place on our tables and sparkling
lights that catch our eyes, let us not forget the
greatest gift we have received, and that is the
coming of Jesus —our Savior.”
