This document contains a 3 question mechanics exam for a third year mechanical engineering course. Question 1 asks to determine the amplitude of steady motion of a 3kg mass experiencing simple harmonic forcing and damping. Question 2 asks to estimate the amplitude of forced vibration of a 500kg mass supported on a beam when the supports vibrate at the natural frequency. Question 3 has two parts: (a) calculates the periodic time of damped vibration for a 50kg mass suspended from a spring, and (b) finds the amplitude of motion when the mass is subjected to a periodic force of 180N at 2Hz.

YEAR 3 SEMESTER II

EMC 4424: MECHANICS OF MACHINES IV – CAT II

TIME: 2 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS – Attempt all the questions in this paper.

– Maximum marks for each part of a question are shown.
Question ONE
A mass of 3Kg is supported by an elastic structure and causes a static extension of 60mm. The
mass is acted upon by a simple harmonic disturbing force having a maximum value of 10N and a
frequency of 1.5Hz. The system experiences a damping force proportional to the velocity of
motion and equal to 36N at a velocity of 1m/s. Determine the amplitude of steady motion of the
forced vibration. (5 Marks)

Question TWO
A vibrating system consists of 500Kg supported on a beam arrangement. The static deflection
under the mass is 8.17mm. Damping effects are small and are estimated from observing the
amplitude of vibration of the mass decreasing from 5mm to 1.25mm in approximately 4 seconds.
If the supports of the beam are now given a vibratory movement of amplitude 2.5mm and
frequency equal to natural frequency of the system, estimate the amplitude of the forced
vibration of the system. (7 Marks)

Question THREE

(a) A mass of 50Kg suspended from a spring produces a static deflection of 18.5mm and when
in motion it experiences a viscous damping force with a value of 720N at a velocity of
1m/s. Calculate the periodic time of damped vibration.
(b) If the mass in part (a) above is then subjected to periodic disturbing force, having a
maximum value of 180N and making 2Hz, find the amplitude of the ultimate motion.
