Entrepreneurship course outline by Dr.

Muhammad Farooq
Department of Management Sciences Emerson Univeristy Emerson University, Multan

Entrepreneurship
Credit Hours: 3 (3-0)

Course Description and Objectives

Course is abut learning to start a new business, growing an established
business. It is about learning how ideas are converted in real business . Course
focus is on increasing the critical thinking, risk taking and innovation approach
of students. Different case studies global and local (particularly in context of
Pakistan and Multan) will be discussed to increase the students interest in the
field of entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship is critical to the prosperity of a nation. It is one of the most
essential economic development inputs. An entrepreneur is defined as a
person who possesses the initiative, talent, and drive to start his or her own firm
or enterprise and who strives for great accomplishments.
Economists define entrepreneurship as a mix of invention and risk taking. When
such activity flourishes, substantial growth rates are reached, and opportunities
are made available to all sectors of society, including the impoverished. The
latter profit from economic development and job creation, as well as from
chances for entrepreneurship. The government's overbearing influence in the
marketplace greatly limits innovation and risk-taking in Pakistan.
Entrepreneurship has been misdirected to seeking government favours from
the early days of planning, when protection and subsidy policies chose market
winners. Government economic policy also aims to foster development via a
‘mercantilist' strategy in which domestic trade is severely controlled due to
neglect. This sector either employs or provides entrepreneurial chances to most
of the poor. As a result, deregulating this sector might be a top focus in an anti-
poverty policy.
