SINAV ENGg

This document appears to be an exam for a course on electromechanical energy conversion. It contains 3 questions testing students' knowledge of DC motors and transformers. Question 1 has multiple choice questions about topics like how speed changes with load on different motor types. Question 2 provides parameters for a series DC motor and asks students to calculate efficiency at full load and another operating point. Question 3 asks about a cumulatively compounded DC motor, requiring calculations of no-load speed, full-load speed, and speed regulation using provided diagrams.

2. A 8-hp, 110-V series DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 and a series field resistance
of 0.16 . At full load, the current input is 62 A, and the rated speed is 1080 r/min. Its
magnetization curve is shown in the following Figure. The core losses are 180 W, and the
mechanical losses are 250 W at full load. Assume that the mechanical losses vary as the cube of
the speed of the motor and that the core losses are constant. (Hint: 1 hp  746 W ) (36p).
a) What is the efficiency of the motor at full load?
b) What are the speed and efficiency of the motor if it is operating at an armature current of
42A?

3. If the motor is connected cumulatively compounded as shown in the figure 3.1 and if
Radj = 175 , what is its no-load speed? What is its full-load speed? What is its speed
regulation? Approximately plot the torque-speed characteristics for this motor. The magnetization
curve for the DC motor is given in figure 3.2. ( I L = 55 A , N SE = 27 turns , N F = 2700 turns
and Neglect armature effects in this problem.) (36p)
