PROPERTIES OF A WELL-WRITTEN TEXT
1. ORGANIZATON
2. COHERENCE
3. COHESION
4. LANGUAGE USE AND MECHANICS
1. ORGANIZATION
is the logical progression and completeness of ideas in a text

Basics to a Well-Organized
Paragraph

The formul of STTC (Single idea,

topic sentence, appropriate technique
and connectives) makes a well-
structured paragraph.

Learning English Language

There are many ways to improve and develop

English proficiency. Reading

articles in books,
newspapers, and magazines

is just among the

helpful ways. Speaking in English every day is also
proven effective. Another way is watching English
movies and TV shows particularly with English
subtitles.

1. ORGANIZATION
Instruction in organization focuses on two areas:
Text Structure
Cohesive Elements
Patterns of Organization

1. Chronological Order
2. Spatial Order
3. Climactic Order
PASSAGE # 1
This morning was crazy. My alarm clock was set for PM instead
of AM, so I woke up really late. I just threw on some clothes
and ran out the door. I rode my bike as fast as I could and
thought that I was going to be late for sure, but when I got
there everyone was outside and there were firetrucks all lined
up in front of the school. I guess somebody pulled the fire
alarm before classes started. It worked out though, because
nobody really noticed or minded that I was tardy.
PASSAGE # 2
The inside of Bill's refrigerator was horrible. On the top
shell was a three week old carton of milk. Next to it, sat
a slice of melon that had started to get moldy. To the
right of the melon sat the remains of a macaroni and
cheese dinner that had been served a week ago. On the
shell below was a slice of cake from his sister's birthday
party. Though there was food, none of it was edible.
PASSAGE # 3
The potential effects of small increase in the eartth's
atmospheric temperate could cause drastic changes. A rise of
only a few degrees could melt the polar ice caps. Rainfall
patterns would change. Some desers might bloom, but lands
now fertile might turn to desert and hot climates make the
earth uninhabitale. If the sea level rose only a few feet,
dozens of coastal cities would be destroyed, and life as we
know it might changed utterly.
II. Cohesion
refers to connectivity in a text
refers to the formal features of a text
DIRECTIONS: Fill in each blank with an appropriate
chronological order signal from the list provided.
Use each signal only once. Change small letters to
capital letters and add commas where necessary.

How to Annoy a Teacher
(6) ______________________ raise your hand and ask to be excused to go to the
restroom. (7) _______________________ be sure to slam the door, and again, make as
much noise as possible while taking your seat. (8)______________________ turn the
pages of your book noisily, search in your backpack for a pencil, ask your
neighbor if you can borrow an eraser, and announce in a loud voice that you
cannot find your homework. (9) ______________________ raise your hand and ask to
be excused to look for it in your locker. If the teacher should happen to call
on you during the class, mumble an answer. (10) _____________ mumble again-
maybe a little louder this time, but still not loudly enough to be heard. If the
teacher dares to ask you
Examples of Cohesion

Lexical Cohesion

Grammatical Cohesion
III. Coherence
pertains to the connection
and organization of ideas in a
text to creat unity or oneness
ideas.
PASSAGE# 1
The Santacruzan is a Maytime pageant. It recalls the
searching and finding of the true cross by St. Helena and
Constantine. It is sponsored by the National Press Club.
Prominent ladies or popular movie stars in elegant
ternos walk underneath flowered arches. Each
participant plays the role of a Biblical character. The
glow of candles and luces and the smell of sampaguitas
lend beauty to a truly enchanting summer ritual.
PASSAGE # 2
I did rough work on y first night in the plant. I swept the floor and
picked up the waste and dirt with my bare hands. I carried heavy
machine parts in my arms or on my shoulders. I screwed bug pipes
together. A kind worker showed me how to hold a file and with it I
smoothed off edges of five-push button plates. He was a big man,
handsome, hardworking fellow who had been at the same job for
fifteen years and knew many interesting stories about the plant. Within
15 minutes, my hands were blistered, my arms impregnated with black
metal dust and machine oil, and my mouth full of grease. When I was
through at midnight. the muscles of my feet, legs, hands and and back
ached terribly. I dragged myself home and slept like a dead man.
IV. LANGUAGE USE

refers to the
appropriateness of
language to be used.
Six Characteristices of
Effective Language
Concrete and Specific Language

Concise Language

Familiar Language

Precise and Clear Language

Constructive Language

Formality of Language
Formal Vs. Informal
1. We asked the secretary to call
the professor and get her
permission for us to continue
our research.
Biased Vs. Unbiased Language

1. The chairman wants to have a

conference with the Board of
Trustees.
V. LANGUAGE MECHANICS

describes the technical

aspect of writing
