Selection - Lab Activities 1-6

The document summarizes Joanna Fe T. Jaim's findings from various activities exploring woven and knitted fabrics: 1) Through activities examining her own clothes and visiting a fabric store, she identified different fabric weaves like twill, basket weave, and rib knits using a magnifying glass. 2) Her research found that woven fabrics are stronger, less stretchy, and more durable than knitted fabrics, which are softer, more wrinkle-resistant, and easier to maintain. 3) Videos of weaving and knitting processes showed them creating fabrics by interlacing threads or forming connected loops, respectively, in traditional and modern methods.

BTLE-HE 3 Laboratory Activity # 1

1. Examine the fabric of some of the garments you wear and identify the fabric as
woven or knit. Use a magnifying glass to make it easier. List all your observation in
an A4 bond paper. Support your output with pictures as you perform the task.
(Individual)
In this task, I used a magnifying application called magnifier. I examine my
fabrics using this magnifying app. In this way, I can easily identify different kinds of
fabric, like for example in image number 1, this fabric is a woven. Woven  fabrics are
often created on a loom, and made of many threads woven on a warp and a weft.
Technically, a woven fabric is any fabric made by interlacing two or more threads at
right angles to one another. Woven fabrics are generally more durable. Fabrics that
are woven do not stretch as easily as knitted fabrics, which can make them
advantageous for many uses.

I believe image number 1 is a twill weave because it has diagonal pattern

created by the way the weft thread is taken over two or more warp threads. Common
example of twill weave is denim fabric. The yarns are packed very closely together,
resulting in that strong, thick fabric you know. This weave is the most durable.

Fabric in image number 2 is a knit fabric. Knit fabrics are formed by interloping
yarns. Knit is a cool and breathable fabric. My observation is that knit fabric has less
work cost of assembling, as compared to woven fabric. It has many advantages from
softness to elasticity. Base on my examination using magnifier app this is a rib knit. A
rib knit is a texture with particular and noticeable opposite ribs on its front and back.
Rib knits are reversible twofold confronted textures.

Moreover, I believe it is important to know different kinds of fabrics because if

you have knowledge about it, then it is easier for you to choose a good quality fabric
that you can wear every day.

BTLE-HE 3 Laboratory Activity # 2

Visit a fabric store. While there, find and identify fabrics of the different weaves and
knit structures. Be sure to take your magnifying glass with you. (Group activity; group
from HE-10)

3. Research online information about woven and knit fabric characteristics. Individual

Woven fabric

A fabric that is made by weaving the individual fibers together rather than knitting
them, it can be made from different types of fibers. Examples of woven fabric include
denim, flannel, and velvet, among others.

Characteristics

 Structure

Woven fabrics are stronger. They’re frequently used to make sturdier items or
items that are designed to be worn more.

 Stretch

Woven fabrics are not as stretchy as knit fabrics.

 Durability

Woven fabrics are very durable and tend to last for a long time.

 Texture

Woven fabrics tend to have a coarser texture instead of being soft. They may
also be heavier and stiffer.

 Cost

Woven fabrics tend to be a little more expensive than knit fabrics, although the
exact cost will depend on the fiber it is made with.

 Sewing

Woven fabrics are very easy to sew with since they don’t stretch as much. They
are less likely to move or gather under the needle.

Knit fabric

Knit fabric is a textile that results from interlocking yarn together with long needles.
Knit fabric falls into two categories: weft knitting and warp knitting.
Characteristic:

 Stretchy and flexible

Knit fabric forms from a series of loops, it’s incredibly stretchy and can stretch
both in width and length.

 Wrinkle-resistant.

Due to knit fabric’s elasticity, it’s very wrinkle-resistant.

 Soft.

Most knit fabrics are soft to the touch.

 Easy to maintain

Knit fabric doesn’t require a lot of special care like hand-washing and can easily
handle machine-washing.

 Easy to damage

Knit fabric isn’t as durable as woven fabric, and it will eventually begin to stretch
out or pill after wear.

 Difficult to sew

Due to its stretchiness, knit fabric is much harder to sew (either by hand or on a
sewing machine).

BTLE-HE 3 Activity # 4 Narrative Easy

Find someone in your community who weaves or knits fabrics and learn about the
process or search online a video recording dealing with the process of weaves or
knits fabrics. Make a 1 page A4 narrative essay on what have learned from this task.
(Individual)

Processing of weaves or knits fabrics

I learned many things on the videos that I watched. The process of weaving
and knitting. In weaving, it is a process in which fabrics are produced by interlacing
two sets of thread that’s why it’s called weaving. In knitting, it is a process in which
fabrics are produced by set of connected loops from a series of yarn in weft or warp
direction that’s why it called knitting.

I watched video of traditional process of weaving in Baguio City. They used

old machine in making fabrics. I believe that this handwork is a masterpiece. It takes
time to create a fabric that is durable for everyone to use. On the other hand, I also
observe the process using modern machines for weaving. The advantage of speed
weaving machine is it was times 10 faster than the traditional. But it requires a good
standard of technical training and diligence to ensure satisfactory operation.

I learned that knitting is manufactured by interloping from a single set of

yarns. I remember, when I was in high school we do hand knitting. In knitting, long
needles are used to interlink or knot a series of loops made by one continuous
thread. Knitting using machine is a step by step process. First, after threading the
machine, cast on it. Move the needles forward and wrap the yarn around them. Make
sure the yarn is fully in the carriage before you begin to knit. Then attach a comb
weight and claw weights. Push the carriage and begin to knit. Reposition the claw
weights to keep the stitches consistent Change color by cutting the first yarn and
inserting the second into the carriage. Push the carriage again and then tie the two
colors together and lastly push the needles forward and remove the claw weights.

Knitting is a difficult process but if hand knitting is your hobby, then be it.
The benefits of hand knitting are, it was relaxing and fun. In the videos that I watched
I learned a lot of new things. Process of weaving and knitting takes a lot of hard
work. We need to be thankful to all textile manufacturers for producing us fabrics that
we used in making our clothes.

BTLE-HE 3 Activity # 6

List all your findings from your activity # 2 and # 3 (paragraph form) tasks in an A4
bond paper. Supply documentation for these tasks. (Individual)

In our group activity # 2, we visit warehouse store for this activity. I discovered
that there many kinds of fabrics. It is easier for us to identify different kinds of fabrics
by using a magnifying app called magnifier. There are many woven fabrics in the
store such as plain weave, plain rib weave, plain basket weave, twill weave, dobby
weave, sating weave, and many more. Knitted fabrics are also present in the store.
Most of them are rib knit like sweatshirts, double knit like knitted jacket. My findings
are that knit fabrics are stretchable while woven fabrics are very durable and tend to
last for a long time.

In activity # 3, I was able to know different characteristics of woven and knit

fabrics. I learned about the advantages and disadvantages of woven and knit fabrics.
In woven fabrics texture tend to have a coarser texture instead of being soft. They
may also be heavier and stiffer while knitted fabrics are soft to the touch. Woven
fabrics are very easy to sew with since they don’t stretch as much. They are less
likely to move or gather under the needle while knit fabrics are difficult to sew due to
its stretchiness; knit fabric is much harder to sew (either by hand or on a sewing
machine). And that’s my findings about activity # 2 and activity # 3.
