Session 1

Systems thinking views a system as a set of elements that interact with each other to produce behavior over time. It involves analyzing how the structure of a system generates its behavior through the interactions of its components, which include inputs, processes, outputs, feedback, and the environment. A key aspect of systems thinking is understanding how feedback loops within a system can either reinforce or counteract changes over time.

Systems thinking: Foundations

Structure of complex systems generates behaviour
-Dynamics of structure emerge from the interaction of:
Physics of system
Tools to- Elicit and articulate mental models and impact of Information availability
social and organizational structure- context of busy people in Decision rules to turn information to action
organizations Mental models matter (a lot)
Expand mental models by explicitly accounting for feedback - It is not enough to change physics, information in IT system, and incentives
(time delays, non linearity) (not sufficient)
Test and improve mental models and structures via simulation The fundamental attribution error (mental model)
Insight that improves our mental models! For change to - Our instinct is to blame the people in the system. Almost always a low
