Once completed, reflect your media usage in comparison with theirs. Then, answer the following questions:
1. How often do you use these media?
I only use online medias often, it’s for either news or entertainment. Most of the medias I use is
for music, online news, and movies.
2. When do you use these media?
I use these medias when I want to know the current news locally or internationally,
when I want to listen to music, or watch movies for entertainment when I want to
relax.
3. How do you demonstrate your responsible use of media? Cite at least two examples.
As a responsible user of media I don’t spread fake news in my social media accounts, I only
spread information that is sure and legit that comes from a reliable source. Also, I know the
proper netiquette, I don’t start a fight or I don’t share hate posts. I always think before sharing or
posting anything because I don’t want to “accidentally” share hate/insulting posts. I also use
respectful language in every of my post, I don’t post people’s pictures without their consent, and
my privacy and other people’s privacy is the most important and should always be secure.

What’s New
Process Questions:
1. According to the news article, what is the problem being discussed or reported?
According to it a US documentary film is “derogatory and biased” because it shows only one side of the
story, the war on drugs in the Philippines. The problem is people who will watch this without a full knowledge
on what’s happening in the Philippines might think that our government is killing people without a reason.
2. What violation is committed by the US documentary film “On The President’s Orders according to
former Spokesperson Salvador Panelo?
Film is being used as a medium to espouse one-sided information bordering to black propaganda. They
overdramatized the docufilm for cinematic purposes.
3. Do you agree that making derogatory remarks on individuals or organization is a responsible way of
using the media and information? Explain your answer.
No. We should not use media to scare, degrade or bad mouth anything or anyone. Media should be used
to inform without scaring or degrading so people who’ll read or watch it will not get a bad idea. Media and
information is not supposed to be scary for anyone because everyone uses media and it should be a safe space
for learning and entertainment.

Process Questions:
1. What is the article all about?
About how educators can make the students understand plagiarism more; for the students to be
aware and educated about it.
2. What do you mean by plagiarism?
It is copying or stealing a work, in every letter and word, without a proper citation or credits. Claiming it
as your work even if it’s not.
3. Is it considered a responsible use of media and information? Explain your answer.
No, it’s not. Because media is not there so you can steal or copy something. Media is there to inform,
give you a little idea so you can make your own. And in media, plagiarizing will always be a crime.

What I Have Learned

Answer briefly.
1. What does it mean to be a media and information literate?
It means that you should be a responsible media and information user. You should know the do’s and
don’ts when using media and you should know what you should do with the information you got from the
media.
2. Define plagiarism. Cite an example.
According to the Meriam-Webster online, plagiarism means to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of
another) as one’s own, to use “another’s production” without crediting the source. Example of this is Sen. Tito
Sotto’s RH speeches. His then-chief of staff, Atty. Hector Villacorta admitted that they copied the senator’s RH
Bill speech from a blogger named Sarah Pope. No action was taken for this.
3. Do you agree that being media literate means you are also information literate? Prove your point.
Yes because we put and get information using media. So this two is connected, we should be responsible
in using the media while also being responsible in using the information we got from the media. You should
know how to use the media when giving information or getting information. You are also responsible with the
things you post or put in the media.
4. Discuss the adage “Think before you Post.”
Since a lot of people uses media, especially social media, we should be careful about what we post
online. We’re not the only one who’ll see it and it can be harmful or insulting for others if we don’t think before
posting. The information we share on the media should not spread hate or start a fight, it should only inform,
educate and entertain in a good way. Because we are responsible of what we post in the media.
What I Can Do
You are selected as an ambassador of Media and Information Literacy in your school. One of your goals is to
inform and spread awareness of the responsible use of media and information not only in your school but also
to other schools. Your task is to create and design a photo story on how to be a responsible user of media and
information. Remember that your output must meet the standards because it will be submitted to the School
Council.

Additional Activities
A. Write an essay on why is being a responsible use of media and information important in today’s
highly digital world?
Digital Age

Living in a digital world where almost everyone has a social media account it is not shocking
that we are declared as the most active users on a number of web-based social network sites. We have 76
million internet users in our country, with such a big number of people using this media it is not new to
us anymore if something or someone is trending.
Filipinos having social media creates a really big impact on everyone’s life. One person can post
a cute video of his dog and it can spread to millions in just a span of minutes because people like cute
dogs so they share it, and their friends share it, and their friend’s friend share it, and it goes on like that
until it reaches to millions of Filipinos. Another example can be a rant post for a scammer, one person
posted a scammer and asked his friends to share it so everyone will be aware and won’t be scammed like
him. If almost all of his friends share it and reaches a thousand more people in the social media then it
can save the scammer’s next victim. Or when someone is missing or asking for justice, social media
have a really big part on Filipinos lives because this is how we connect, not just to others that we know
but to the whole country and the world. Because of the huge number of Filipinos in social media we can
make something or someone trending in just a short time. This is why everyone should have knowledge
of the basic netiquette and we should all be a responsible user of media and information. One wrong
click or post can change a life and hurt someone. Sometimes, we do things without the intention of
hurting others but media is a very huge platform and we might hurt someone unintentionally because
he/she saw the post around and for them it might be insulting. If we are a responsible user of media and
information, spreading of fake news can be lessen. Since fake news is one of the biggest enemy of media
and information other than plagiarism, being educated about how to check if the news or article is false
or not can have a huge change or impact to the media and information users. Especially here in our
country, the more responsible media and information users we have the better media platform we can
show for the next generations because admit or not, social media right now if not safe for everyone.
There’s fake news everywhere, there’s one rant after another, it’s full of negativity. If Filipinos learn
how to be a responsible user of media and information then spread of positivity would be very easy.
Filipinos love entertainment and we really enjoy sharing what makes us happy, if we are a responsible
user of media, we will know that not everything that made us laugh is ought to be shared. There’s a lot
of foul jokes going around and it can be insulting or hurtful for others and once we share it or post it, we
are responsible for that. We are responsible for what they will feel about themselves. We have the
responsibility to educate not just ourselves but also others who are using media because holding or
having information is not a simple thing it is a huge responsibility we all should not ignore but embrace
and accept.
Having a huge number of Filipinos using social media can both be a good and a bad thing. If we
just continue sharing entertaining and educating videos or posts then our stay on social media would be
peaceful but we also can’t stop seeing negative posts in social media so we have to learn the art of
ignoring and educating the people who don’t know the proper netiquette yet. If everyone who have a
social media account learns the proper netiquette and responsibility then social media will surely be safe
for everyone to use.
