Math Unit 1 - Geometry 2d 3d Shapes
Math Unit 1 - Geometry 2d 3d Shapes
Rationale: Students at this age have been scaffolding their knowledge of different shapes and their
properties, which is why they are ready to begin learning the mathematical terms such as vertices, faces,
translation, rotation, and reflection. This unit has lots of hands-on learning and experimentation which
will keep the students engaged and curious about the many properties of two- and three-dimensional
shapes and how they can find these shapes all around them.
- K 2.2.1: Common geometric attributes include sides, vertices, and faces or surfaces
- K 2.2.2: Two-dimensional shapes may have sides that are line segments
- K 2.2.3: Three-dimensional shapes may have faces that are two-dimensional shapes
- U 2.2.4: Shapes are defined according to geometric attributes
- U 2.2.5: A shape can be visualized as a composition of other shapes
- S 2.2.6: Sort shapes according to two geometric attributes and describe the sorting rule
- S 2.2.7: Relate the faces of three-dimensional shapes to two-dimensional shapes
- S 2.2.8: Create a picture or design with shapes from verbal instructions, visualization, or memory
-
- K 2.2.9: A shape can change orientation or position through slides (translation), turns (rotations), or flips
(reflections).
- K 2.2.10: Shapes can be turned or flipped in the creation of art
- U 2.2.11: Geometric attributes do not change when a shape is translated, rotated, reflected
- S 2.2.12: Investigate translation, rotation, and reflection of two- and three- dimensional shapes
- S 2.2.13:Describe geometric attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes in various orientations
- S 2.2.14: Recognize the translation, rotation, or reflection of shapes represented in artwork

Differentiation/Inclusion
- TA, AS, and DB may need our EA beside them to facilitate the activities we complete- they are not
independent when starting things
- For students who need redirecting, I can use proximity (standing close to the student) to keep them on track,
as well as eye contact and verbal reminders (VL, AH, AS, TA, DB, MB)
- For students who finish the day’s activity early, I will have sponge activities based upon 2D/3D shape
creation, sorting, and identification, as well as translation, rotation, and reflection for them to go to
- For students who are lower academically, their peers can assist, I can repeat instructions and reminders in
different ways, modify their objectives to make them simpler, etc.
- Some students may need supports such as movement breaks, fidgets, moving/wobbly chairs, and will be
allowed to make use of them (as long as they are not distracting from the content. They are to serve as a
support and not a toy.) (AS, MB, VL)
- ELL students may need extra guidance/reinforcement with directions and understanding concepts etc. (KM)
