Distinction between Sex and Gender

- The distinction between sex and gender allows us to


acknowledge that some of the differences between men
and women are traceable to biology, while others have
their roots in environment, culture, upbringing and
education – what feminists call ’gendered socialization’.

- Sex refers to what is biological , and in some sense


‘natural’, whereas gender refers to what is socially
constructed (cultural).

Gendered Socialization

- Gender roles determine how males and females should


think, speak, dress, and interact within the context of
society.
- Gender roles define what is masculine and feminine.
- Parents, teachers, peers, films, television, and religion
teach and reinforce gender roles through conditioning,
such as boys getting toys like guns while girls are given
dolls or cooking sets.

Gendered Socialization

- Examples:
ü Women are expected to take care of the family or
domestic duties and remain close to home.
ü Men are expected to work and earn money for the
family.

Gendered Socialization

- Stereotypes are generalizations or assumptions that


people make about the characteristics of all group
members based on an image (often wrong).

- Examples:
Men – strong, tough, aggressive
Women – forgiving, motherly, passive, soft

The Binary Caste System of Sex and Gender

- Maleness above femaleness

- Manhood above womanhood

- Masculinity above femininity

- Individuals are inculcated into


one of the two classes.

The Binary Caste System of Sex and Gender

- Emphasizes that there are only two


genders.
- This idea asserts the superiority of males
over females and thus constrains the
potential of males and females.
- Those who do not conform to the
expectations can experience criticism,
ostracism, and even violence.

Disability

- Impairment refers to a problem with a structure or organ


of the body.

- Disability refers to difficulty carrying out tasks or


activities of daily life.
- Example:
Impairment – Loss of a limb
Disability – Difficulty walking

subjected to double discrimination:
Sexism and Disability Bias.

- Among PWDs, the gap between men


and women are more distinct. Apart
from poverty, discrimination and
prejudice are the major challenges
they face daily.

- Women with disability are more likely to be unemployed;
- If employed, they received considerably lower wages
than men with disabilities;

Gender Sensitivity

- The act of being sensitive to the ways people think about


gender.
- Ensures that people rely less on assumptions about
traditional and outdated views on the roles of men and
women.
- Use more inclusive language and words that are gender

- Mandates the state to ensure that persons with


disabilities have access to quality education, making
special education provision able to serve various types
