Interpreting Motion Using Charts & Graphs (Module) PDF
Charts
*a sheet containing information in the form of a table or of lists or by means of
diagrams.
Ticker Tape Timer is a device that represents the position of an object at constant
intervals of time with dots. Before the advent of computers in physics laboratories, a
common way of analyzing the motion of objects was to perform a ticker tape
analysis. This is done in physics laboratories. Scientists would use an experimental
moving object to quantitatively interpret its motion.
What do these dots mean?
Deceleration because the dots are from each other at first then they got closer
Acceleration because the dots were close to each other then got farther later
Graphs
*a visual representation of points that often represent the relationship between two
or more things.
Position-time graphs are motion graphs that show a change in an object’s location over
time. The position is placed on the y-axis, while the time is placed on the x-axis.
Distance-time Graph - tells us how far an object has moved with respect to time.
Here are samples of the lines or slopes with their corresponding interpretations.
*The object remained at 3 meters from 1 second to 7 seconds. Therefore, the object
was not moving or at rest.
*The object started from 0, and at the 5th second, it had reached 7 meters.
Considering this, we can say that the object is increasing its speed.
*The motion started at rest, then started accelerating at the 1st second. When the
object reached 4 meters, it started speeding down. Now, we can conclude that the
object's speed is decreasing.
Speed-time Graph - this graph does not measure speed; it measures the change in
speed.
Here are some samples of the lines or slopes under speed-time graph with their
interpretations.
*The speed of the object was 5 m/s at first, but when the time passed to 7 seconds,
the object was now running at 35 m/s. To interpret, the speed is consistently
increasing as the distances between the gaps are equally aligned.
*From 0 to 7 seconds, the object did not exert any speed. It remained at rest;
therefore, there was no motion. The object was not moving.
Displacement-time Graph -It interprets the velocity of an object. As you can
observe, it is the same with speed, but the only difference is that displacement has
direction.
The following are the line or slope samples under the displacement-motion graph with
their interpretations.
*The object remained at 4 meters from the 1st second until the 7th second. Now, we
can confirm that the object is not moving and that there is no velocity.
*The object has increased its velocity. At 1 second, it has reached 1 meter; at 2
seconds, it has reached 2 meters; and up to the 7th second, the object has now
traveled 7 meters. The displacement and the time are aligned with an upward pattern.
With that, the object is moving at a constant velocity.
*From 35 m/s, the velocity decreased to 0 m/s at the 7th second. So, there was no
acceleration but deceleration. A downward slope is deceleration.
*The object started at rest, then suddenly increased its velocity. To conclude, the
object has accelerated. There was an acceleration.
Take note:
Distance-time graph = Speed
Speed-time graph = Change of Speed
Displacement-time graph = Velocity
Velocity-time graph = Acceleration
