Homework 2
Problem 1

70m and 46m respectively. Compute the flow rate of water through each
branch of the loop. Assume C=120 for all pipes
Problem 3
A two branch commercial steel pipe system delivers 0.42 m3/s of water. The
pressure at B is 22kPa gage. What is the pressure at A? Neglect minor losses.
Use f=0.015
Problem 4

3 700 500
Problem 5
The total head loss from A to E as shown in the figure is 20 m. Use f = 0.02 for
all pipes. Find the discharge at lines 2, 1 and 4.
Problem 7
The system of pipe connections is as follow. Assuming C = 120 for all pipes
and assume that the rate of flow for each network is 0.085 m3/s. (a)
Calculate the total headloss of system A. (b) Calculate the discharge of
line 2 of system B. (c) Which of the system has the greater capacity ( Hiint :
the one with the lowest headloss has the greatest capacity)
Problem 9
Two reservoirs A and B, feed a third rervoir C as shown in the figure. Assuming
constant reservoir water levels given in the figure and making use of the data
given in the table below, Compute the discharge flowing in or out each reservoir.
Problem 11
The design of a city water supply system is shown in the figure below. Pipe 1
is 300 mm diameter and 900 m long, pipe 2 is 200 mm diameter and 387 m
long, and pipe 3 is 200 mm diameter and 700 m long. The roughness
coefficient for all pipes is 0.011. Calculate the flow in pipe 1 2 and 3.
Problem 12
Given are three reservoir A, B and C having elevations of 200m, 150m and
100m. Reservoir A and Junction is connected by pipe 1, reservoir B and
junction connected by pipe 2 and reservoir C is connected to junction by
pipe 3. Find the flow rate in each pipe. Give the total energy at the
junction.
In the figure shown, the flow from reservoir A is 438 liters/sec. Use Manning’s
formula (n = 0.011). (a) Compute the elevation of the energy gradient of
junction C. (b) Compute the rate of flow from reservoir B. (c) Determine the
power extracted by the turbine DE if the pressure head at E is -3 m.
Problem 14
Determine the flow into or out each reservoir in the pipe system shown. Use
n = 0.11 , L1 = 1200m , L2 = 900m, L3 = 1500m, D1 = 30 cm, D2 = 20 cm, D3 = 15
cm.
Problem 15
The pipe shown serves two town C and D. The highest building in town C is
at elevation 21 m and that of town D is 18m. If f = 0.020 for all pipes, what is
the flow in each pipe? If the per capital consumption in the two towns is 3.5
mL/s, how many persons could be served in each town?
Problem 16
The diameters of the suction and discharge pipes of a pump are 15 and 10
cm respectively. The discharge pressure is read by a gage at appoint 1.5
m. above the centerline of the pump and the suction pressure is read by a
gage 0.6 m. below the centerline. If the pressure gage reads 140 kPa and
the suction gage reads a vacuum of 21 cm Hg when gasoline is pumped
at the rate of 35 liters/sec (SG of gasoline is 0.75)
