INTRODUCTION:

In English, the second conditional is one of the four conditional tenses used to talk about hypothetical or
unlikely situations. In this lesson, we will learn how to construct and use the second conditional tense in
English.

EXPLANATION:

The second conditional is used to talk about hypothetical or unlikely situations in the present or future.
It is formed by using the past simple tense in the condition clause and the modal verb "would" + base
form of the verb in the result clause.

FORMULA:

If + past simple, would + base form of the verb

EXAMPLES:

1. If I had more money, I would travel the world.

2. If it weren't so late, we would go out for dinner.

3. If I spoke Spanish, I would apply for that job.

4. If she had a car, she would drive to work.

5. If we won the lottery, we would buy a big house.

USAGE:

The second conditional is used to talk about hypothetical or unlikely situations in the present or future.
For example, if I had more money, I would travel the world. This means that I don't currently have
enough money to travel, but if I did, I would travel. Similarly, if it weren't so late, we would go out for
dinner. This means that it is too late to go out for dinner, but if it weren't, we would go.

ACTIVITIES:

1. Complete the second conditional sentences with the correct past tense verb.

- If I (have) more time, I (learn) a new language.


- If he (be) taller, he (play) basketball professionally.

- If we (not miss) the train, we (arrive) on time.

2. Have students create their own second conditional sentences using prompts. For example, "If I could
fly, I would visit the moon."
