LESSON 3: RESPONSIBLE USE OF MEDIA AND
INFORMATION

In the previous lesson, you gained additional information about the similarities and
differences of media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy and the significant role
that play in one’s life.

Media and Information plays a significant role on communication. Every part of our
communication relies mostly to different forms of media. As we embrace the leisure of what
technology offers, we must always bear the proper conduct and responsible use of information
as we keep in touch to our digital world.

In this lesson you will learn to:

Discuss responsible use of media and information. (MIL 11/12LESI-IIIg-18)

CONCEPTS OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION:

Media and other information providers play a central role in information and
communication processes. Nowadays, media become the common outlet of self-expression and
creativity. Its huge influence spreads speedily across the globe. The connection between
technological advances and people’s connectivity created a huge impact to the lives of today’s
generation. This module covers all the above-mentioned concepts.

Media and Information literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media in
our everyday lives. Empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is an
important prerequisite for fostering equitable access to information and knowledge and promoting
free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems. Media and Information Literacy
is composed of three main concepts: Media Literacy, Information Literacy and Technology/Digital
Literacy. Developing necessary skills and competencies about these concepts is an effective way
to use and produce information from the traditional and new media.

The BIG QUESTIONS now are:

 What problems are being encountered with the use of media and information?
 How do we see the effect of social media to teenagers today?
 How can we become a responsible user and competent producer of media and
information?
 RESPONSIBLE USE OF MEDIA:
We defined Digital Literacy/Technology Literacy as the ability of an individual, either working
independently or with others, to responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological
tools. This concept has something to do with issues arising in the digital world today.

Day after day, as we keep in touch to the digital world, we leave our digital footprint. According
to Malcolm Higgins (2021), your digital footprint is the data that you leave online, with or without
your knowledge. It includes private messages, emails, browsing history, interests and dislikes,
your relationship status, and even the angle at which you hold your mobile device. Anything that
is tracked and stored is a part of your digital footprint. That data can then be categorized as either
an active or a passive footprint.
 Active footprint: Everything you choose to share online leaves an active footprint. That
includes your tweets, comments, and even private data like emails and cloud uploads.
 Passive footprint: Your passive footprint includes all the data that exists online without
your knowledge or, sometimes, your consent. It’s the subtler, more technical information;
the kind of devices you use, the operating systems you favor, your IP address, and so
much more. This is the data that you make public just by interacting with the internet.

As part of this digital world, how do you wish your digital footprint would be?
With the growing trend in the use of technology, cases of its unethical use are also surging up.
With this concern, ethical use of media should be given great emphasis through inculcating Digital
citizenship.

Digital citizenship refers to the ability to engage positively, critically and competently in the
digital environment. It starts with Digital access. Digital access refers to the ability to fully
participate in digital society. This includes access to tools and technologies, such as the internet
and computers, that allow for full participation.

Some Ways Media can be Unhealthy:

1. Distraction and loss of productivity
The temptation to glance at social media can take people out of meetings, gatherings and
other events.
2. Addiction
The constant urge to check social media and writes posts or to play online games can
lead to addiction.
3. Stress and mood
“The longer that people are active on social media, the more negative their mood is.”
(Sagioglou & Greitmeyer, 2014)
4. Social isolation
“People ages between 19-32, the people who spent the most time on social media were
twice as likely to report feelings of social isolation.” (Primack, et al., 2017)

Having full access to technology requires continuously developing norms of appropriate,

responsible, and empowered technology use which refers to Digital Citizenship. Let’s take a look
at the Nine elements of Digital Citizenship to understand its content.

The elements (9 elements of digital citizenship) have also been organized under the principles of
respect, educate and protect. To fully grasp it, take a look on the image below.

9 ELEMENTS OF DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

1. Digital Health & Wellness- Physical and psychological well-being in a digital world.
2. Digital Security- Electronic precautions to guarantee safety
3. Digital Rights & Responsibilities- Those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world
4. Digital Literacy- teaching and learning about technology and its use
5. Digital Access- Full electronic participation in society
6. Digital Commerce- electronic buying and selling goods
7. Digital Communication- electronic exchange of information
8. Digital Etiquette- electronic standards of conduct or procedure
9. Digital Law- electronic responsibility for actions and deeds

Digital citizenship also includes Digital Etiquette which pertains to electronic standards
of conduct or procedures and has to do with the process of thinking about others when using
digital devices. Recognizing online proper conduct is a must and it has something to do with
“Netiquette”. Netiquette defines as set of rules about the proper and polite way to communicate
with other people when using the internet (Merriam- Webster dictionary).
Common issues in the digital world such as bashing and online bullying occur due to improper
conduct online.

As a responsible online user, the following core rules should be taken into consideration:

Other Ways to Use Social Media responsibly:

1. Turn off notifications while doing something important.

2. Limit your screen time.
3. Note the quality of your online interactions.
4. Beware of what you post and share online.
5. Go for more offline interactions.
 RESPONSIBLE USE OF INFORMATION:
As we engage in the digital world, we came up with so
many sources of information. The main issue now is;

How can we responsibly used that information?

There are 2 major issues on how we deal information;

1. the spread of fake news/information; and
2. Plagiarism

1. Fake information:
a. Misinformation
- A false information that is intentionally or unintentionally
disseminated on media.
- created by an individual or groups
- result of shared unverified information

b. Disinformation
- intended to convince online users to favor a group or
individual’s political perspective.

How to avoid fake information?

1. Always check the source and author of the information.

- ask yourself: Is it from credible news and information agency? Is the author reliable?
2. Check the date of publication.
- check the date when the information was published or posted
3. Always do fact check.
- read and research a little more before you decide to pass along the information

2. Plagiarism
- the act of using another author’s language,
thoughts, ideas, or expressions of one’s original
work.

o+plagiarism

Acts that shows Plagiarism according to Plagiarism.org (p.org):

 Turning someone else’s work as your own
 Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
 Failing to put quotation in quotation marks
 Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
 Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
 Copying so many words or ideas from a source that is makes up the majority of your
work whether you give credit or not

As a responsible user of information:

 You should not claim information that is not originally yours

 Do not just copy and paste
 Rephrase the ideas
 Come up with your own words
 Always give proper credit to the authors and sources

Media and Information plays a significant role on communication. Every part of our

what technology offers, we must always bear the proper conduct and responsible use of
information as we keep in touch to our digital world.
