Early Minting History of Coins in Oman
The earliest Islamic Mints were established in Oman which minted the oldest Arabic coin.
The first Islamic silver Dirhams which are similar to the Sasanian Drachma, Byzantine
currency and Islamic Gold dinars and Copper pieces are said to be minted in the Omani mints.

Image of the obverse of a Maria Theresa Thaler issued in 1780. Mentioned on this face is
"R.IMP.BO.REG.M.THERESIA.DG". (meaning: Empress of the Romans, Bohemia, Queen
Maria Theresia, by the Grace of God). Another inscription on Thalers was "M. THERESIA D.G.
R. IMP.HU.BO.REG". (This inscription included Hungary as well).

Recent development of the Omani Rial and Baisa denominated currency:

Before 1940, the Indian Rupee and the Maria Theresa Thaler (called the Rial in Oman)
circulated as the principal currencies in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. The Indian rupee
circulated in the coastal areas and the Thaler circulated in the interior of the country.

A British India silver one rupee coin showing Empress Victoria, issued in 1882. This type of coins
were initially circulated in the Protectorate of Muscat and Oman.
Reverse of the above coin showing the year of issue as 1882

66
The above are obverse and reverse images of a one quarter anna copper coin showing Empress
Victoria, issued in 1890 also used initially in the Protectorate

Maria Theresa Thaler

The Maria Theresa thaler (MTT) is a silver bullion coin that has been used in world
trade continuously since they were first minted in 1741, at that time using the then
Reichsthaler standard of 9 thalers to the Vienna mark. In 1750 the thaler was debased to 10
thalers to the Vienna Mark (a weight approximating half a pound of fine silver). The
following year the new standard was effectively adopted across the German-speaking world
when that standard was accepted formally in the Bavarian monetary convention. It is owing
to the date of the Bavarian Monetary convention that many writers erroneously state that the
Maria Theresa Thaler was first struck in 1751. It was named after Empress Maria Theresa,
who ruled Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia from 1740 to 1780. The word thaler gave rise
to daalder and daler, which became dollar in English.

67
Maria Theresa Thaler

The Maria Theresa Thaler is probably one of the most famous and well-known coins of the
world.

Early Coins of Muscat & Oman

The first coins were issued in 1311 Hijra (~ 1891 A.D.) under the reign of Faisal bin Turki.
The denominations were 1/12 Anna, also known as Ghazi, and 1/4 Anna, also known as
Paisa. The initial issue of 1311 was only minted that year and replaced by a second and
entirely different issue between 1312 and 1318. The first issue is illustrated below:

69
The second issue brought with it a very wide variety of designs and fonts and styles, all
derived from the same basic features. The issue is known for being crude and with many
minor and some major varieties, accounting for the large range of catalogue numbers
associated with this issue in the Standard Catalogue of World Coins. In order to simplify
which coins (referenced by KM #) exist for which date, see the chart below:

Dawlat Oman (1955-1959)

In 1955 a revolt in the Imamate of Oman against Sultan Said bin Taimur was led by Imam
Ghalib bin Ali Al-Hinai (1912-2009). A state was founded, the State of Oman (Dawlat
Oman). The insurgency lasted five years until the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces (aided by
British soldiers from the Special Air Service) put down the Jebel Akhdar revolt in 1959, and
Ghalib escaped to Dammam in Saudi Arabia.

The flag of the insurgents was white with a sword and the text of the Quran surah LXI, verse
13: “Victory and Liberty with God’s Help” in Arab, all red.

The emblem of this ephemeral state was:

137
Emblem of the State of Oman on 50 Riyal coin minted 1971

Emblem: Two State flags on their poles on saltire, crested with a crescent-and- five-
pointed star and surrounded by two swords in base.
