Revision Ws PHY-Unit 6 - Sound and Space

This practice sheet covers concepts related to sound and space, including amplitude, frequency, wave reinforcement and cancellation. Students are asked to define key terms, draw diagrams demonstrating wave interactions, and explain the collision theory for the formation of the moon with evidence both supporting and contradicting the theory. Calculations involving wave amplitudes that result in cancellation are also included.

Practice sheet – 1

Unit 6 – sound and space

1. What is amplitude, peak and trough? When amplitude increases what happens with
loudness?
2. What does reinforce mean? Draw a diagram of reinforce of waves.
3. How do noise cancelling headphone works?
4. Explain collision theory for formation of moon with diagrams.
5. Write the three evidence that supports for collision theory and three evidences that
contradicts the collision theory.
6. Draw a diagram where waves are cancelling each other.
7. What is frequency? Write unit of frequency.
8. Draw diagram of higher frequency with high pitch, lower frequency with low pitch but
with same amplitudes.
9. Two sound waves equal frequencies of 600 Hz. The amplitude of one of the waves is
0.25 mm.
a. State the amplitude of the other wave requires for the two waves to cancel.
b. State the amplitude after waves cancel completely.
