Week 1 Lesson Plan Inquiry Model

This 5th grade music lesson introduces students to the four families of musical instruments - brass, woodwind, string, and percussion. Through exploring various instruments, watching demonstration videos, and group research, students will identify similarities and differences between instrument types and categorize them into families. They will define each family and discuss any instruments that do not clearly fit. To assess understanding, students will generate additional instruments or draw and describe a new invented instrument, classifying it into a family.

[Inquiry Model]

Lesson Title: [Instrument Families]

Targeted Grade Level: [5th]

Academic Subject: [Music]

Lesson Goals:

Students will be exploring the similarities and differences between each of the 4

families of musical instruments and what defines each grouping.

Lesson Objectives:

 Students will be able to recognize and categorize the differences between

how instruments are played.

 Students will be able to categorize instruments according to the materials

they are composed of.

 Students will be able to define the similarities and differences between

instruments and their respective families.

 Students will create an imaginary instrument and categorize it according to

the attributes defining each family.

Materials/Resources Needed:

 3 or more Brass instruments

 3 or more Percussion instruments

 3 or more String instruments

 3 or more Woodwind instruments

 Cards with names and pictures of instruments

 Paper

 Writing utensils

 Video examples of musicians playing each family of instrument

Lesson Components:

Phase 1: Area of Investigation Is Posed to the Students

When students arrive to music class there will be instruments laid along the

perimeter of the room, in a randomized order. Students will be asked to look at,

touch and even hold the instruments carefully. Students will take notes of their

observations. After students have had time to explore and take notes, the teacher

will show a variety of brief videos that demonstrate musicians playing different

instruments that were show cased in the room. Students may also take notes

during the video. The teacher will then ask the students to figure out what

similarities and differences the instruments possess. This is their “problem”.

Phase 2: Students Structure the Problem

Students will be broken up into small groups of 3 or 4. Students will then begin

comparing notes, having discussions, and researching instruments using classroom

textbooks, picture cards, the instruments in the room and available technology.

Once students have had adequate time to research, the groups will come back

together to share their findings with the whole class

Phase 3: Students Identify the Problem in the Investigation

Based on their discussions and research, students should be able to conclude that

there are four families of instruments: Brass, Woodwind, String and Percussion.

Phase 4: Students Speculate on Ways to Clarify the Difficulty

After The four families have been classified, students will determine the defining

differences between the families. Afterwards, students will discuss as a whole

group, any instruments that did not clearly fit into a category and come to a

conclusion about it. Students will then generate or invent any additional

instruments that could belong in one of the families. Students who choose to invent

rather than generate, may use their note taking paper to draw a picture of their

invented instrument and be able to articulate how it is played and why it belongs to

its assigned family. Students who choose to generate may create a list of

instruments and be able to articulate how it is played and why it belongs to its

assigned family

Evaluation:

Student performance will be evaluated through verbal responses and the

generated lists and instrument invention.
